The Chelsea Arts District, sometimes also called the West Chelsea Arts District or the Chelsea Gallery District is a region of Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City, that runs from 18th to 28th Street between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue that is known for its concentration of art galleries. It developed as part of the neighborhood's rezoning and shift in the international art market in the late 1990s and early 2000s.{{cite web |title=Chelsea Galleries Walking Tour |url=https://www.nyc-arts.org/collections/38592/chelsea-galleries-walking-tour |website=NYC-ARTS |access-date=16 July 2021 |date=18 October 2012}}{{cite book |last1=Martegani |first1=Micaela |last2=Kasper |first2=Jeff |last3=Drew |first3=Emma |title=More Art in the Public Eye |date=3 January 2020 |publisher=Duke University Press |isbn=978-1-7330993-2-5 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=W6TODwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Chelsea+Arts+District%22&pg=PT17 |access-date=16 July 2021 |language=en}}

While many galleries feature a rotating series of exhibits, the district is also known for longterm or permanent projects, such as Joseph Beuys' 7000 Oaks which began in 1988 with five trees that marked Dia Chelsea's opening and was extended in 1996 and remains due to a partnership with the Departments of Parks & Recreation and Transportation.{{cite news |last1=ElGenaidi |first1=Deena |title=Joseph Beuys's Only Public Artwork in New York Temporarily Unearthed |url=https://hyperallergic.com/450372/joseph-beuys-7000-oaks-project-nyc/ |access-date=16 July 2021 |work=Hyperallergic |date=6 July 2018}}{{cite web |title=Joseph Beuys: 7000 Oaks Extended On West 22nd Street, New York City {{!}} Press {{!}} About {{!}} Dia |url=https://www.diaart.org/about/press/joseph-beuys-7000-oaks-extended-on-west-22nd-street-new-york-city/type/text |website=www.diaart.org |publisher=DIA Foundation |access-date=16 July 2021}}{{cite web |title=Joseph Beuys, 7000 Oaks {{!}} Visit Our Locations & Sites {{!}} Visit {{!}} Dia |url=https://www.diaart.org/visit/visit-our-locations-sites/joseph-beuys-7000-oaks |website=www.diaart.org |publisher=Dia Foundation |access-date=16 July 2021}}{{cite book |last1=Zimmer |first1=Lori |title=Art Hiding in New York: An Illustrated Guide to the City's Secret Masterpieces |date=22 September 2020 |publisher=Running Press |isbn=978-0-7624-7101-0 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=lHjIDwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Chelsea+Arts+District%22&pg=PT115 |access-date=16 July 2021 |language=en}}
