Chiloglottis pluricallata, commonly known as the clustered bird orchid, is a species of orchid endemic to the New England Tableland and Barrington Tops in New South Wales. It has two broad leaves and a single reddish to purplish brown flower with a callus of about six pairs of reddish to blackish glands covering two-thirds of the top of the labellum.
Description
Chiloglottis pluricallata is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with two elliptic leaves {{convert|50-80|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|18-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide on a petiole {{convert|10-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. A single reddish to purplish brown flower {{convert|18-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|25-30|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide is borne on a flowering stem {{convert|50-75|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. The dorsal sepal is egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base, {{convert|19-21|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|7-9|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are {{convert|15-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and taper towards their ends. There is a glandular tip {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long on the end of the dorsal sepal and about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long on the lateral sepals. The petals are lance-shaped, {{convert|15-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread apart from each other. The labellum is broadly heart-shaped, {{convert|11-12.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|9-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There are about twelve erect, linear, reddish to blackish glands on a wrinkled callus {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long covering two-thirds of the labellum near its base. The column is greenish brown with darker markings, {{convert|13-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with narrow wings. Flowering occurs from November to January.{{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =144}}{{cite journal|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=New taxa of Australian Orchidaceae|journal=Australian Orchid Research|date=1991|volume=2|page=40}}{{cite web|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=Chiloglottis pluricallata|url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Chiloglottis~pluricallata|publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney|accessdate=22 April 2018}}
Taxonomy and naming
Chiloglottis pluricallata was first formally described in 1991 by David Jones from a specimen collected at Point Lookout and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research.{{cite web|title=Chiloglottis pluricallata|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/551599|publisher=APNI|accessdate=22 April 2018}} The specific epithet (pluricallata) is derived from the Latin words plurimus meaning "most"{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.}}{{rp|540}} and callus meaning "hard skin",{{rp|716}} referring to the many glands on the labellum of this orchid.
