Chiloglottis triceratops, commonly known as the three-horned bird orchid, is a species of orchid endemic to Tasmania. It has two broad leaves and a greenish brown to purplish brown flower with a few column-like calli near the mid-line of the labellum.
Description
Chiloglottis triceratops is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with two leaves {{convert|30-60|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-25|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. A single greenish brown to purplish brown flower {{convert|15-24|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|25-30|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide is borne on a flowering stem {{convert|15-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. The dorsal sepal is spatula-shaped to egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base, {{convert|15-24|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|8-11|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are linear to narrow lance-shaped, {{convert|15-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There is a glandular tip {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long on the end of all three sepals. The petals are lance-shaped but curved, {{convert|15-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|4-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide and curve forwards. The labellum is broadly egg-shaped to heart-shaped, {{convert|12-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|9-13|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a brown to black column-like callus {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall in the centre surrounded by similar but shorter calli. The column is greenish brown with dark red streaks, {{convert|15-16|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with narrow wings. Flowering occurs from November to January.{{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|pages =144–145}}{{cite journal|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=Contributions to Tasmanian Orchidology|journal=Australian Orchid Research|date=1998|volume=3|pages=66–67}}
Taxonomy and naming
Chiloglottis triceratops was first formally described in 1998 by David Jones and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research.{{cite web|title=Chiloglottis triceratops|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/575564|publisher=APNI|accessdate=23 April 2018}} The specific epithet (triceratops) refers to the similarity between the dinosaur Triceratops and the tall calli on the labellum of this orchid.
