Coercive citations

In 2015, it was reported by Jeffrey Beall that the journal offered to waive their article processing charge for authors whose articles would be cited more than 6 times (apparently including self-citations) in the first two years after publication.{{cite web |first1=Jeffrey |last1=Beall |authorlink=Jeffrey Beall |url=http://scholarlyoa.com/2015/07/21/chinese-journal-has-surprise-author-fee-but-gives-refund-if-you-cite-your-article-six-times/ |title=Chinese Journal Has Surprise Author Fee But Gives Refund if You Cite Your Article Six Times |work=Scholarly Open Access |date=2015-07-31 |accessdate=2015-08-03 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150728085341/http://scholarlyoa.com/2015/07/21/chinese-journal-has-surprise-author-fee-but-gives-refund-if-you-cite-your-article-six-times/ |archivedate=2015-07-28 }} This practice is known as coercive citation. In a reaction, the editorial office stated that this episode "was totally due to the inappropriate English expression of our newly joined editor" and that "[t]he publication fee waiver based on the citations has been eliminated."
