Cho Yong-hyung ({{korean|조용형}}, born 3 November 1983) is a South Korean football coach and former player, who is the assistant coach of South Korea national football team.

Club career

Cho joined K League club Bucheon SK in 2005, and was voted into the K League Best XI after his successful debut season. He continued playing for the club in the 2006 season when it changed its stronghold to Jeju Province. He was called "the next Hong Myung-bo" by showing great potential in Bucheon and Jeju.{{cite news |url=http://www.gnmaeil.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=71167 |script-title=ko:‘제2의 홍명보’ 조용형, 경남FC 이적 |language=ko |publisher=Gyeongnam Maeil |date=2007-01-16 |access-date=2023-11-10}}

Cho was traded to Gyeongnam FC before the 2007 season because Jeju United wanted to bring players whose hometown was located in its region. However, he was sold to Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma just after joining Gyeongnam,{{cite news |url=https://m.news.nate.com/view/20070121n00659?sect=s02&list=rank&cate=interest |script-title=ko:조용형, 제주에서 경남으로, 다시 성남으로 |language=ko |publisher=JoyNews24 |website=Nate |date=2007-01-21 |access-date=2023-11-10}} and played as a full-back, not a centre-back. He did not live up to expectations in Seongnam due to unfamiliar role.{{cite news |url=https://star.ohmynews.com/NWS_Web/OhmyStar/at_pg.aspx?CNTN_CD=A0000829989 |script-title=ko:실수를 통해 더욱 성장하는 조용형 |publisher=OhmyNews |language=ko |date=2008-02-27 |access-date=2023-11-10}}

Cho returned to Jeju United only a year after leaving the club. He once again had a hard time in 2009 season when he was operated on for a knee cartilage injury and showed poor performances.{{cite news |url=https://www.jejunews.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=256344 |script-title=ko:제주utd "아! 조용형...시즌 개막이 눈앞인데..." |language=ko |publisher=Jeju News |date=2009-02-18 |access-date=2023-11-10}} He also conceded eight goals in a match against Pohang Steelers in the middle of the season. However, he helped Jeju maintain its first place in the league until the first half of the next season, and then left a good impression in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.{{cite news |url=https://www.donga.com/news/Sports/article/all/20170927/86564689/9 |script-title=ko:[사커 피플] 웃음 찾은 조용형 “이젠 정상에 서고 싶다” |language=ko |publisher=The Dong-a Ilbo |date=2017-09-28 |access-date=2023-11-10}}

Some Premier League clubs were interested in Cho in the summer after the World Cup,{{cite news |url=https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-scouting-report-all-about-cho-127396 |title=Aston Villa Scouting Report: All about Cho Yong-hyung |publisher=Birmingham Live |date=2010-06-30 |access-date=2023-11-11}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.tribalfootball.com/south-korea-defender-cho-yong-hyung-wanted-aston-villa-939431 |title=South Korea defender Cho Yong-hyung wanted by Aston Villa |publisher=Tribal Football |access-date=1 July 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120325024456/http://www.tribalfootball.com/south-korea-defender-cho-yong-hyung-wanted-aston-villa-939431 |archive-date=25 March 2012 |url-status=dead }} but they did not give specific offers to him. He moved to Qatar Stars League club Al-Rayyan on a 2-year deal, until the end of the 2011–12 season.{{cite web |title=Al Rayyan capture Cho |url=https://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=1279923.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101104020449/http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=1279923.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=4 November 2010 |publisher=FIFA |access-date=19 June 2013}} There was an unusual option of joining La Liga club Málaga, owned by the owner of Al-Rayyan, at the end of the contract period in his contract with Al-Rayyan. Nevertheless, he extended his contract two years later because he did not have confidence to compete with Málaga defenders.{{cite web |url=https://sports.hankooki.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=6530198 |script-title=ko:조용형이 말하는 중동-말라가-제주 “제주는 날 4번 불러준 곳” |publisher=Sports Hankook |language=ko |date=2020-08-05 |access-date=2023-11-11}}

International career

Cho was named the best defender of the 2010 EAFF Championship,{{cite web |publisher=EAFF |title=2010 Final Competition Match Schedule |url=https://www.eaff.com/competitions/eafc2010/match_result_m.html |access-date=2023-11-14}} although he had difficulty marking Chinese players in the competition.{{cite news |url=https://star.ohmynews.com/NWS_Web/OhmyStar/at_pg.aspx?CNTN_CD=A0001330964 |script-title=ko:허정무호 코트디부아르전 23人, 포지션별 분석 |publisher=OhmyNews |date=2010-02-25 |access-date=2023-11-14 |language=ko}}

Cho was selected for the national team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup,{{cite web |publisher=FIFA |title=2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Players |url=https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player=237771/profile.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100611165213/http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player=237771/profile.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=11 June 2010}} but he was suspected of incompetence by Korean fans. He was largely criticised by being nicknamed "Huh Yong-hyung", which meant manager Huh Jung-moo's son, before the World Cup. However, their flak was changed to praise after his outstanding defence in the World Cup.{{cite news |url=https://weekly.hankooki.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=7075091 |script-title=ko:조용형은 어떻게 월드컵 욕받이에서 영웅으로 거듭났나 |publisher=Hankook Ilbo |language=ko |date=2022-11-21 |access-date=2023-11-14}}

Style of play

Cho could play as a full-back or a defensive midfielder, but he showed his best performances when playing as a centre-back. He was praised in the K League for his positional sense and steadiness under pressure.{{cite news |publisher=CBC |title=Cho Yong-Hyung: South Korea's defensive everyman |url=https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/cho-yong-hyung-south-korea-s-defensive-everyman-1.963048 |date=9 June 2010}}
