Ciao 2001 is an Italian monthly music magazine originally published between 1969 and 2000. It reprised its publications in 2023.

History and profile

The magazine was founded in 1969 in Rome, as the result of the fusion of the music magazines Big (later Ciao Big) and Ciao Amici.{{cite book |last1=Inchignoli |first1=Maurizio |title=Musica di carta: 50 anni di riviste musicali in Italia |date=12 January 2023 |publisher=Arcana |isbn=978-88-9277-190-1 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=iCanEAAAQBAJ |language=it |chapter=Il dominio di Ciao 2001}} In a few years, it became the most sold music magazine in Italy, mostly attracting a young audience.{{cite news |last1=Guglielmi |first1=Federico |title=My Back Pages: Ciao 2001 |work=Mucchio Extra |issue=35 |date=Winter 2001}} Initially focused on pop music, it gradually covered all music genres, including beat, rock, jazz, and folk. It also had columns devoted to radio and television, theatre, art, and psychology.

After a massive success, especially in the early 1980s, the magazine suffered a long decline, which led to its first closure in 1994. It first reprised its publications in 1999, rebranding itself in Ci@o for its final five issues in 2000. In 2023, the magazine was relaunched by former collaborators Maurizio Becker and Renato Marengo.{{cite news |title=Torna in edicola Ciao 2001 |url=https://www.rockol.it/news-740970/ciao-2001-torna-edicola-bimestrale-maurizio-becker-renato-marengo |access-date=20 September 2024 |work=Rockol |date=1 December 2023 |language=it}}{{cite news |title="Ciao 2001" torna in edicola, un cult per gli appassionati |url=https://www.ansa.it/sito/notizie/cultura/musica/2024/03/03/ciao-2001-torna-in-edicola-un-cult-per-gli-appassionati_1a982f6b-a562-4e15-99c7-10192e1c8ffe.html |access-date=20 September 2024 |work=ANSA |date=3 March 2024 |language=it}}
