"Cidade maravilhosa" ({{IPA|pt|siˈdadʒi maɾaviˈʎɔzɐ}}, Marvelous City) is a march that was written and composed by André Filho and arranged by Silva Sobreira for the Rio de Janeiro carnival in 1935.{{cite book |title=Proceedings of the Twenty Seventh General Assembly Rio de Janeiro 2009: Transactions of the International Astronomical Union XXVIIB |last=Corbett |first=Ian F. |year=2010 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |isbn= 9780521768313|page=54 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=CAqFelkSlcMC&q=%22Cidade+Maravilhosa%22+anthem&pg=PA54 |access-date=October 22, 2010}} It has since become the anthem for the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, Aurora Miranda recorded a sung version of the song that became extremely popular.{{cite book |title=Rio de Janeiro: carnival under fire |last=Castro |first=Ruy |year=2004 |publisher=Bloomsbury Publishing USA |isbn= 9781596919853|page=91 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=iYDbMpRdYGIC&q=%22Cidade+Maravilhosa%22+anthem&pg=PA91 |access-date=October 22, 2010}}{{cite book |title=Carmen Miranda: melodias cifradas para guitarra, violão e teclados : 30 sucessos, biografia com photos e CD bônus |last=Dussek |first=Eduardo |year=2000 |publisher=Irmãos Vitale |isbn= 9788574071107|page=60 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=towInTbvqnIC&q=%22Cidade+Maravilhosa%22+anthem&pg=PA60 |access-date=October 22, 2010}}

The name of Rio, however, does not appear in the song. Cidade Maravilhosa as a nickname for the city of Rio de Janeiro was coined by the writer Coelho Neto from the north-eastern Brazilian state of Maranhão as a tribute to the city's natural beauty. He had lived there briefly as a child and for much of his later life.{{cite book |title=No tempo de Ari Barroso |last=Cabral |first=Sérgio |publisher=Lumiar Editora |isbn= 9788585426071|page=137 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=X5JaAAAAMAAJ&q=%22Cidade+Maravilhosa%22+C%C3%A9sar+Ladeira |access-date=October 22, 2010}}

Its title was also inspired by a highly successful radio program of the time, presented by César Ladeira. The anthem was popularized by Carmen Miranda and was declared the "official song of Brazil's new state of Guanabara" in 1960, after being converted into a samba.{{cite news |title=Samba named Rio's anthem |newspaper=The Miami News |date=April 23, 1960 |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=L6IyAAAAIBAJ&pg=4632,3922465&dq=cidade-maravilhosa&hl=en |access-date=October 22, 2010}}
