Cincelichthys is a genus of high-bodied cichlids found in southern Mexico to Guatemala, where they inhabit lakes, rivers (typically sluggish) and other freshwater habitats.{{cite journal | author = McMahan, C.D. | author2 = Matamoros, W.A. | author3 = Piller, K.R. | author4 = Chakrabarty, P. | name-list-style = amp | year = 2015 | title = Taxonomy and systematics of the herichthyins (Cichlidae: Tribe Heroini), with the description of eight new Middle American Genera | journal = Zootaxa | volume = 3999 | issue = 2 | pages = 211–234 | url = http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2015/f/zt03999p234.pdf | doi=10.11646/zootaxa.3999.2.3 | pmid = 26623572| s2cid = 34699955 }}{{cite journal|title=Diversity and evolution of the Middle American cichlid fishes (Teleostei: Cichlidae) with revised classification|author=Říčan, O.|author2=Piálek, L.|author3=Dragová, K.|author4=Novák, J.|name-list-style=amp|journal=Vertebrate Zoology|pages=1–102|volume=66|issue=1|year=2016|doi=10.3897/vz.66.e31534 |doi-access=free }}{{cite iucn |author=Quintana, Y. |author2=Lyons, T.J. |date=2020 |title=Cincelichthys bocourti |volume=2020 |page=e.T150123901A152306186 |doi=10.2305/IUCN.UK.2020-2.RLTS.T150123901A152306186.en |access-date=28 December 2021}}{{cite iucn |author=Lyons, T.J. |date=2019 |title=Cincelichthys pearsei |volume=2019 |page=e.T192885A2179640 |doi=10.2305/IUCN.UK.2019-2.RLTS.T192885A2179640.en |access-date=28 December 2021}} They are large cichlids, up to {{cvt|35–42.5|cm|in|0}} long depending on species, with females reaching smaller sizes than males.{{cite web| last=Artigas Azas | first=Juan Miguel | date=15 July 2015 | title=Cincelichthys bocourti (Vaillant & Pellegrin, 1902) | url=https://cichlidae.com/species.php?id=184 | publisher=CichlidRoom | accessdate=28 December 2021 }}{{cite web| title=Herichthys pearsei | url=https://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/herichthys-pearsei/ | publisher=SeriouslyFish | accessdate=28 December 2021 }}

They feed on vegetable matter,{{FishBase genus|genus=Cincelichthys|month=June|year=2018}} like fruits, parts of aquatic and land plants, and algae. They share their chisel-like teeth with Kihnichthys and whether they should be merged into a single genus is not yet fully resolved. A review in 2020 recommended that Kihnichthys should be moved into Cincelichthys.{{cite journal | last=Artigas Azas | first=Juan Miguel | year=2021 | title=Kihnichthys, a junior synonym of Cincelichthys | journal=Cichlid News Magazine | volume=29 | edition=4 | pages=10–12 }}
