History

Cine Blitz was launched by Russi Karanjia's Rifa Publications in December 1974, and his daughter Rita Mehta became the first editor-in-chief of the magazine.{{cite web|url=http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/specials/proj_tabloid/protimastory.shtml|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20021222201414/http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/specials/proj_tabloid/protimastory.shtml|url-status=dead|archive-date=22 December 2002| title=Cine Blitz profile|work=The Hindustan Times|access-date=27 July 2014}}

To give the new magazine "a flying start", Rita Mehta approached Protima Bedi and asked her to streak across Mumbai, first at Flora Fountain and then at Juhu Beach. Pictures of it would be carried in the inside pages of the inaugural edition.{{cite web | title = Protima's naked run: Cine Blitz Profile|publisher=Hindustan Times| url = http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/specials/proj_tabloid/protimastory.shtml | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20021222201414/http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/specials/proj_tabloid/protimastory.shtml | url-status = dead | archive-date = 22 December 2002 | access-date = 2014-07-30}}{{cite web| title = CineBlitz Film Magazine| publisher = VJM Media| url = http://www.vjmmedia.com/cineblitz.html| access-date = 2014-07-30| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140922001922/http://www.vjmmedia.com/cineblitz.html| archive-date = 22 September 2014| url-status = dead}}

The ensuing controversy forced the magazine to then (falsely) claim that the naked run was actually shot in Goa and later superimposed on images of Mumbai. However, the goal of popularising the new magazine was achieved and Cine Blitz went on to become one of India's leading film and gossip magazines for years to come. Its attitude was reflected in its rather tongue-in-cheek tagline of "C to Z of Hindi Films - Everyone covers AB".

For the subsequent three decades Cine Blitz continued to be a leading film magazine. However around 2000, the magazine sales stagnated for three years and in 2001 it was acquired by UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya under groups by VJM Media Private Limited, though Rita Mehta, its previous owner continued as editor-in-chief of the magazine.{{cite web | title = Business houses and publishing: Is there a synergy? | url = http://www.afaqs.com/news/story/3453_Business-houses-and-publishing:-Is-there-a-synergy |author=Alokananda Chakraborty|publisher=afaqs!|date=30 October 2001|access-date = 2014-07-30}}{{Cite news |title=(India's) Vijay Mallya to buy Cine Blitz magazine |url=https://www.rediff.com/money/2001/oct/23mallya.htm |access-date=2014-07-30 |location=Bombay |via=rediff.com |id=Factiva [https://global.factiva.com/redir/default.aspx?p=sa&NS=16&an=lba0000020011023dxan00pbq&drn=drn:archive.newsarticle.lba0000020011023dxan00pbq&cat=a&ep=asi lba0000020011023dxan00pbq] |agency=Reuters}}

The acquisition lead to the revamp of the magazine, and in 2003 Cine Blitz launched its international editions, US and UK editions catering to the Asian diaspora, with launch function in London.{{cite web | title = International edition of Cineblitz launched in London|publisher= Economic Times| url = http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2003-09-10/news/27554279_1_new-edition-vijay-mallya-uk | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140812233544/http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2003-09-10/news/27554279_1_new-edition-vijay-mallya-uk | url-status = dead | archive-date = 12 August 2014 | access-date = 2014-07-30 }}{{Cite news |date=10 September 2003 |title=Bollywood gossip mag 'Cineblitz' is relaunched |url=https://redhotcurry.com/archive/news/2003/cineblitz_relaunch.htm |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090731124137/http://www.redhotcurry.com/archive/news/2003/cineblitz_relaunch.htm |archive-date=2009-07-31 |work=Redhotcurry}} And in 2006, Rita Mehta was replaced as editor-in-chief by Nishi Prem, the former editor of Stardust.{{Cite news |last=Punn |first=Goher Iqbal |date=February 28, 2006 |title=Cineblitz celebrates 32nd anniversary |url=http://movies.indiainfo.com/newsbytes/cineblitz-280206.html |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090715065725/http://movies.indiainfo.com/newsbytes/cineblitz-280206.html |archive-date=2009-07-15 |work=Indiainfo.com |department=Movies: Scoop: Full Story |publisher=DB Corp Ltd.}}
