Taxonomy
Citrus neocaledonica was originally named as a member of the genus Citrus by André Guillaumin in 1911,Benjamin C. Stone (1985). "New and noteworthy palotropical species of Rutaceae", Proceedings of The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, vol. 137, pp. 213-228 but the false oranges were moved to a novel genus Oxanthera in the Swingle and Tanaka systems of citrus taxonomy. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Oxanthera species clustered within Citrus, which makes this species a member of that genus.{{cite journal |last=Bayer |first=R.J. |display-authors=etal |year=2009 |title=A molecular phylogeny of the orange subfamily (Rutaceae: Aurantioideae) using nine cpDNA sequences|journal=American Journal of Botany |volume=96 |issue=3 |pages=668–685 |doi=10.3732/ajb.0800341 |pmid=21628223 }}
