History

The Beacon Street line opened in 1889; most streetcars ran through Cleveland Circle to Lake Street after 1896, with some terminating at the Chestnut Hill Carhouse (renamed Reservoir Carhouse around 1900). A waiting room was originally located in a leased building at the southeast corner of Cleveland Circle; it was heavily damaged by fire on December 10, 1897, and the West End Street Railway allowed the property to revert to the owner.{{cite book |url=https://archive.org/details/inventoryofweste01west/page/n368 |page=180 |title=Inventory of the West End Street Railway Company |publisher=West End Street Railway Company |year=1897}}
In 1915, the route was cut back to Reservoir, at the Reservoir Carhouse. Around 1947, the terminus was redesignated Cleveland Circle after the adjacent traffic circle, to differentiate it from the nearby commuter rail station – which, twelve years later, would become a streetcar station itself. Although Cleveland Circle is no longer a traffic circle, the station retains its name.
In the early 2000s, the MBTA modified key surface stops with raised platforms for accessibility. Portable lifts were installed at Cleveland Circle around 2000 as a temporary measure.{{cite web |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120220063458/http://www.bostonmpo.org/bostonmpo/pmt-old/PMT-1.pdf |archivedate=February 20, 2012 |url=http://www.bostonmpo.org/bostonmpo/pmt-old/PMT-1.pdf |title=Executive Summary |work=Program of Mass Transportation |date=January 2004 |publisher=Boston Regional Metropolitan Planning Organization |pages=2–9}}{{cite web |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20010701041753/http://www.mbta.com/text-only/schedmaps/map/map.pdf |archivedate=July 1, 2001 |url=http://www.mbta.com/text-only/schedmaps/map/map.pdf |title=Subway Map |date=2001 |publisher=Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority}} The platform modifications - part of a $32 million modification of thirteen B, C, and E branch stations - were completed around 2003.{{cite book |chapter-url=https://archive.org/stream/ridershipservice2003mass#page/n45/mode/2up |title=Ridership and Service Statistics |page=2.19 |publisher=Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority |date=October 2003 |chapter=Subway Service |via=Internet Archive}}{{cite web |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20040810020602/http://www.mbta.com/insidethet/3_GreenLine.asp |archivedate=August 10, 2004 |url=http://www.mbta.com/insidethet/3_GreenLine.asp |title=Planned Accessibility Projects - On Board the Green Line |publisher=Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority}} On May 2, 2007, the MBTA added a wooden mini-high platform on the outbound side, allowing level deboarding from older Type 7 LRVs.
