Climate Action Tracker (CAT) is an independent scientific project{{Cite news|date=2021-08-07|title=How climate targets compare against a common baseline|newspaper=The Economist|url=https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2021/08/07/how-climate-targets-compare-against-a-common-baseline|access-date=2021-08-26|issn=0013-0613}}{{Cite web|title=Climate Action Tracker- About|url=https://climateactiontracker.org/about/|access-date=2024-02-20|website=climateactiontracker.org}} with the aim of monitoring government action to achieve their reduction of greenhouse gas emissions with regard to international agreements – specifically the globally agreed Paris Agreement aim of "holding warming well below 2°C, and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.".{{Cite web|date=2021-08-10|title=Disaster-struck Turkey faces toll of climate change|url=https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210810-disaster-struck-turkey-faces-toll-of-climate-change|access-date=2021-08-26|website=France 24|language=en}}{{Cite web|title=Leader: A message for the planet|url=https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/environment/2021/07/leader-message-planet|access-date=2021-08-26|website=www.newstatesman.com|date=28 July 2021|language=en}} It is tracking climate action{{Cite journal|last1=Fuso Nerini|first1=Francesco|last2=Fawcett|first2=Tina|last3=Parag|first3=Yael|last4=Ekins|first4=Paul|date=2021-08-16|title=Personal carbon allowances revisited|journal=Nature Sustainability|volume=4|issue=12|language=en|pages=1025–1031|doi=10.1038/s41893-021-00756-w|issn=2398-9629|doi-access=free|bibcode=2021NatSu...4.1025F }} in 39 countries and the EU responsible for over 85% of global emissions.{{cite web | url=https://climateactiontracker.org/about/ | title=The Climate Action Tracker }} The CAT is the product of two organisations: NewClimate Institute [https://newclimate.org/] and Climate Analytics [https://climateanalytics.org/].
The actions it tracks are:
- Effect of climate policies and action on emissions.
- Impact of pledges, targets and NDCs on national emissions over the time period to 2030, and where possible beyond.
- Comparability of effort against countries' fair share and modelled domestic pathways.
COP26
Toward the end of the COP26 climate conference, CAT produced a report concluding that the current "wave of net{{nbhyph}}zero emission goals [are] not matched by action on the ground" and that the world is likely headed for more than 2.4 °C of warming by the end of the century.
