South Sudan is one of the five most vulnerable countries to climate change in the world.{{Cite web |date=2023-08-17 |title=South Sudan Adapts to Climate Change By Restoring Its Ecosystems |url=https://www.unep.org/gan/news/press-release/south-sudan-adapts-climate-change-restoring-its-ecosystems |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230817154947/https://www.unep.org/gan/news/press-release/south-sudan-adapts-climate-change-restoring-its-ecosystems |url-status=dead |archive-date=2023-08-17 |access-date=2023-12-15 |website=Global Adaptation Network (GAN)}} The country is facing the impacts of climate change, including droughts and flooding, which have indirect and interlinked implications for peace and security. Mean annual temperatures across South Sudan have increased by more than 0.4°C every decade in the past 30 years and are projected to increase between 1°C and 1.5°C by 2060, creating a warmer and drier climate. In the northeast, rainfall has decreased by 15–20%, but other regions experienced more frequent and severe floods.{{Cite journal |last1=Siddig |first1=Khalid |last2=Stepanyan |first2=Davit |last3=Wiebelt |first3=Manfred |last4=Grethe |first4=Harald |last5=Zhu |first5=Tingju |date=2020-03-01 |title=Climate change and agriculture in the Sudan: Impact pathways beyond changes in mean rainfall and temperature |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0921800918316458 |journal=Ecological Economics |volume=169 |pages=106566 |doi=10.1016/j.ecolecon.2019.106566 |s2cid=146321871 |issn=0921-8009|hdl=10568/101350 |hdl-access=free }}{{Cite journal |last1=Elagib |first1=Nadir Ahmed |last2=Mansell |first2=Martin G. |date=2000-04-01 |title=Climate impacts of environmental degradation in Sudan |url=https://doi.org/10.1023/A:1011071917001 |journal=GeoJournal |language=en |volume=50 |issue=4 |pages=311–327 |doi=10.1023/A:1011071917001 |s2cid=153835620 |issn=1572-9893}}{{Cite web |date=2019-02-13 |title=Climate Change Profile: South Sudan - South Sudan {{!}} ReliefWeb |url=https://reliefweb.int/report/south-sudan/climate-change-profile-south-sudan |access-date=2023-11-08 |website=reliefweb.int |language=en}}

Agriculture and livestock
{{Further|Agriculture in South Sudan|Economy of South Sudan}}Climate change is having a significant impact on agriculture and livestock in South Sudan. Droughts have killed livestock and disrupted crop cycles, leading to food insecurity. To address this issue, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is distributing early maturing and drought-resistant seed varieties, as well as supporting the introduction of irrigation systems.{{Cite web |date=2021-11-17 |title=A Climate Crisis in Africa: The Case of South Sudan |url=https://www.thecairoreview.com/essays/a-climate-crisis-in-africa-the-case-of-south-sudan/ |access-date=2023-11-08 |website=The Cairo Review of Global Affairs |language=en-US}} The losses of livestock attributed to climate change, coupled with existing rivalries, heighten the probability of cattle theft, which can result in retaliatory actions, communal conflicts, population displacement, exacerbation of inter-communal animosity, and the emergence of armed factions.{{Cite web |date=2023-08-29 |title=Event: Climate Change, Food Insecurity and Conflict in South Sudan {{!}} SIPRI |url=https://www.sipri.org/events/2023/event-climate-change-food-insecurity-and-conflict-south-sudan |access-date=2023-11-20 |website=www.sipri.org |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=2023-04-14 |title=Agriculture and Food Security |url=https://www.usaid.gov/south-sudan/agriculture-and-food-security |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130224123333/http://usaid.gov/south-sudan/agriculture-and-food-security |url-status=dead |archive-date=February 24, 2013 |access-date=2023-11-20 |website=U.S. Agency for International Development |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=NUPI |title=Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet: South Sudan |url=https://www.nupi.no/nyheter/climate-peace-and-security-fact-sheet-south-sudan2 |access-date=2023-11-20 |website=NUPI}}
