History
The CoMaps project was initiated in response to growing concerns and dissatisfaction within the Organic Maps community. The original Organic Maps project, while initially promoted as an open community effort, faced significant issues related to governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community.{{Cite web |title=Wikibooks: Maps.Me to Organic Maps: OM Crisis |url=https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MAPS.ME_to_Organic_Maps/OM_Crisis}}{{Cite web |date=14 May 2025 |title=s3n·net: QUO VADIS - Organic Maps gets community fork |url=https://s3nnet.de/quo-vadis-organic-maps-gets-community-fork |access-date=2025-05-29 |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=devBY: От Organic Maps откололась команда — делает новые карты (опять) |url=https://devby.io/news/comaps}}{{Cite web |title=arabian post: Organic Maps Fork Spurs Governance Debate |url=https://thearabianpost.com/organic-maps-fork-spurs-governance-debate/}} These concerns were detailed in an open letter to Organic Maps shareholders.{{Cite web |title=Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders |url=https://openletter.earth/open-letter-to-organic-maps-shareholders-a0bf770c| date=16 April 2025| language=en| access-date=2025-05-29}} Despite some positive steps, the lack of a substantive resolution led to the decision by the community contributors to start a new independent project.
