Coalition Against Genocide

{{Use mdy dates|date=August 2022}}

The Coalition Against Genocide is a coalition of about 40 organisations mostly based in the United States and Canada, as well as individuals, who aim to respond to the 2002 Gujarat riots, which they refer to as the "Gujarat genocide", in order to "demand accountability and justice."{{cite web|title=About Coalition Against Genocide |publisher=Coalition Against Genocide |url=http://www.coalitionagainstgenocide.org/about.php |access-date=2006-11-05|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081104100809/http://www.coalitionagainstgenocide.org/about.php|archivedate=2008-11-04|url-status=dead}} The coalition of organisations protested against the visit of Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, to the United States in March 2005. Modi was denied a visa and did not visit the U.S. at that time.{{cite web| last =Mathew| first =Biju| title =Stop Funding Hate| publisher =Z Communications| date =2005-08-11| url =http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/5649 | archive-url =https://archive.today/20130416055943/http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/5649 | url-status =dead | archive-date =2013-04-16 | access-date =2008-12-18 }}

History

Angana Chatterji helped form and worked with the Coalition Against Genocide. The Coalition was subject to much public targeting after some incriminating documents{{cite web|url=http://indiatoday.intoday.in/site/Story/89840/States/Inhuman+rights.html|title=Inhuman rights|work=intoday.in|date=March 25, 2010 }} and an anti-Chatterji online petition to the President and Board of Trustees of CIIS appeared.Online Petition: See FOILCIIS petition on Petition Online (link blocked by Wikipedia)

In July 2008, the coalition again protested against another visit by Modi to the United States, claiming that "the conditions under which he was denied a visa in 2005 remain largely unchanged and the minority community in the state continues to face human rights violations.{{cite news | title=US association against visa to Modi | date=2008-07-03 | publisher=Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad | url=http://www.gujaratglobal.com/nextSub.php?id=4189&cattype=NEWS | accessdate=2008-12-18 | archiveurl=https://archive.today/20240524074924/https://www.webcitation.org/5dAXiAmzw?url=http://www.gujaratglobal.com/nextSub.php%3Fid=4189&cattype=NEWS | archivedate=2024-05-24 | url-status=dead }}{{cite news | first=Lalit K | last=Jha | title=Deny US visa to Modi: NRI panel to Rice | date=2008-07-02 | publisher=New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) | url=http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20080055338&ch=7/2/2008%2011:59:00%20PM | accessdate=2008-12-19 | archiveurl=https://archive.today/20240524075006/https://www.webcitation.org/5dAaapX4T?url=http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx%3Fid=NEWEN20080055338&ch=7/2/2008%2011:59:00%20PM | archivedate=2024-05-24 | url-status=dead }}{{cite news|first=Dharam |last=Shourie |title=Indian Americans divided over invitation to Narendra Modi |date=2008-07-03 |work=Rediff.com |url=http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/jul/03modi.htm |accessdate=2008-12-19 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080709011739/http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/jul/03modi.htm |archivedate=2008-07-09 |url-status=dead }} Modi was again denied a visa by the United States State Department.{{cite news|title=US refuses visa to hate agent Narendra Modi, snubs Indian establishment |date=2008-09-03 |publisher=World Sikh News |url=http://www.worldsikhnews.com/3%20September%202008/US%20refuses%20visa%20to%20hate%20agent%20Narendra%20Modi.htm |accessdate=2008-12-19 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20081121052450/http://www.worldsikhnews.com/3%20September%202008/US%20refuses%20visa%20to%20hate%20agent%20Narendra%20Modi.htm |archive-date=2008-11-21 |url-status=dead }}
