History

Coastland Center was built in the mid 1970s, and it was originally anchored by Sears and Maas Brothers, a Tampa-based department store. Maas Brothers opened on February 3, 1977, making it the first store to open.{{cite news |last1=Weitzel |first1=Tony |title=Maas Holds Grand Opening |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-maas-holds-grand-o/107266385/ |access-date=16 October 2024 |work=Naples Daily News |date=3 February 1977 |page=1 |via=Newspapers.com}} {{open access}} Sears opened on July 27, 1977.{{cite news |title=Discover a News Sears...In Coastland Mall |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-discover-a-new-sea/107266452/ |access-date=16 October 2024 |agency=Naples Daily News |date=26 July 1977 |page=67 |via=Newspapers.com}} {{open access}} The first segment of the mall itself, which was an L-shaped section between Sears and Maas Brothers, opened on September 28, 1977.{{cite news |title=All Systems 'Go' For Coastland's Grand Opening |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-all-systems-go-f/107266317/ |access-date=16 October 2024 |work=Naples Daily News |date=27 September 1977 |page=11 |via=Newspapers.com}} {{open access}}

In 1985, the mall underwent its first major expansion, which included additional mall space and two additional anchors on the east side. The first new anchor was JCPenney, which opened on February 6, 1985.{{cite news |title=Coastland Center Adds 45 New Stores in 1985 |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-robinsons-joins-c/107266204/ |access-date=16 August 2022 |work=Naples Daily News |date=16 October 1985 |page=63, [https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-coastland-center-a/157279069/ 64] |via=Newspapers.com}} {{open access}} The second new anchor was Robinson's of Florida, the Florida division of California-based J. The mall received another expansion from 1995 to 1996 which largely focused on the anchors. Sears and Burdines added second floors to their stores and Dillard's built a new two-story store behind their previous store. The former Dillard's store was demolished and replaced with a new larger food court and additional mall space connecting to the new Dillard's store. JCPenney expanded their store to the east, which added a second mall entrance across from the new food court. Parking garages were also added during this expansion.{{cite news |last1=Cone |first1=Clay |title=Mall work reaches final phase |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-naples-daily-news-mall-work-reaches/157279736/ |access-date=16 October 2024 |work=Naples Daily News |date=20 July 1996 |page=39 |via=Newspapers.com}} {{open access}} The mall was further renovated in 2006.{{cite news|last1=Stackel|first1=I.M.|title=Coastland Center a bear market for families |url=http://www.naplesnews.com/business/coastland_center_bear_market_families|access-date=10 February 2015|work=Naples Daily News}}
