The coat of arms of the Republic of South Sudan was adopted in July 2011 following independence from the Republic of Sudan. Prior to independence, South Sudan was an autonomous region of Sudan.
The design of the coat of arms was approved by the cabinet of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan in April 2011, having previously been endorsed by the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly in May 2011.{{cite web |url=http://sudancatholicradio.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=2%3Asouth-sudan&id=3795%3Afishing-eagle-is-south-sudans-official-coat-of-arms&Itemid=84 |title=Fishing Eagle Is South Sudan's Official Coat Of Arms |publisher=Sudancatholicradio.net |date=2011-04-29 |access-date=2012-03-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120320124649/http://sudancatholicradio.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=2:south-sudan&id=3795:fishing-eagle-is-south-sudans-official-coat-of-arms&Itemid=84 |archive-date=2012-03-20 |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=http://www.mirayafm.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6018:south-sudanese-legislature-endorses-national-anthem-and-coat-of-arms&catid=85:85&Itemid=278 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120321194305/http://www.mirayafm.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6018%3Asouth-sudanese-legislature-endorses-national-anthem-and-coat-of-arms&catid=85%3A85&Itemid=278 |url-status=dead |archive-date=2012-03-21 |title=SSLA endorses national anthem and coat of arms |publisher=Mirayafm.org |date=2011-05-26 |access-date=2012-03-13 }}

=Southern Sudan Autonomous Region (2005–2011)=
The Southern Sudan Autonomous Region, that existed between 2005 and 2011, used an emblem consisting of the coat of arms of Sudan surrounded by the legends "GOVERNMENT OF SOUTHERN SUDAN" and "GOSS".{{cite web|url=http://www.gossmission.org/goss/ |title=Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Washington, DC - HOME |publisher=Gossmission.org |date=2012-03-09 |access-date=2012-03-13 |url-status=usurped |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120308185940/http://www.gossmission.org/goss/ |archive-date=March 8, 2012 }} The arms of Sudan depict a secretarybird bearing a traditional shield. Two scrolls are placed on the arms; the upper one displays the national motto, 'OUR VICTORY', and the lower one displays the title of the state, 'REPUBLIC OF THE SUDAN' in the English language.{{cite web |url=http://www.goss-online.org/magnoliaPublic/en/about/symbols.html |title=State Symbols |publisher=Goss-online.org |access-date=2012-03-13 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120429230631/http://www.goss-online.org/magnoliaPublic/en/about/symbols.html |archive-date=2012-04-29 }}
Another emblem was also used by some agencies and offices of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan. This coat of arms was similar to the arms of neighbouring Commonwealth states Kenya and Uganda. It depicted a traditional African shield with the design of the Flag of Southern Sudan, crossed by lances. The shield was supported by a shoebill and a rhinoceros. The compartment depicted local crops and the waters of the River Nile with a scroll bearing the motto "JUSTICE, EQUALITY, DIGNITY".{{cite web |url=http://www.goss.org.za/ |title=GOSS | Government of Sudan Liaison office in South Africa |access-date=2011-02-02 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100812094436/http://www.goss.org.za/ |archive-date=2010-08-12 }}{{cite web|url=https://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/slideshow/photo//110107/481/urn_publicid_ap_org_ee4d0b62b87e4a21a4e0debda3b85c80/ |title=News Photo Galleries & Slideshows - Yahoo!
