It is written in Delphi by Luis Cobian of Umeå University.{{cite web|url=http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/about.htm| title= About: Luis Cobian |access-date=February 22, 2009 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090227074746/http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/about.htm |archive-date=February 27, 2009 }}

History

Cobian Backup was originally released in 2000. The program was later rewritten and released under version 7.

The next version (version 8) was released in 2006. Its source code was later released under the Mozilla Public License in late January 2007. However, with version 9 the author of Cobian Backup decided to switch back to a completely closed source model.{{cite web |title=Version 9 (Amanita) will NOT be published as Open Source |publisher=Luis Cobian, author of Cobian Backup |url=http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm#OS |access-date=2008-05-15 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080511180635/http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm#OS |archive-date=May 11, 2008 }} Older versions will remain Open Source forever, as the release of the program under the Mozilla Public License cannot be revoked.

Development and support by the original author has been discontinued with version 11.2.0.582 and the source code has since been sold off.{{cite web | title = Cobian Backup has been sold | publisher = Luis Cobian, author of Cobian Backup | url = http://www.cobiansoft.com/index.htm | access-date = 2014-04-08 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20171210123424/http://www.cobiansoft.com/index.htm | archive-date = 2017-12-10 | url-status = dead }}{{cite web |last1=Jacobi |first1=Jon L. |title=Cobian Backup 11 (Gravity) review |url=https://www.pcworld.com/article/403337/cobian-backup-11-gravity-review.html |website=PC World |publisher=IDG Communications, Inc. |access-date=23 January 2022|date=March 25, 2019}}

In February 2021 Luis Cobian announced the start of development on a successor program, Cobian Reflector.{{cite web | title = Announcement - Cobian Reflector | publisher = Luis Cobian, author of Cobian Backup | url = https://www.cobiansoft.com/announcement.html | access-date = 2021-03-13 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210813084516/https://cobiansoft.com/announcement.html |archive-date=Aug 13, 2021}}
