Cockburn Sound ({{langx|nys|Derbal Nara}}){{cite web |url=https://www.derbalnara.org.au/wangkiny-language-glossary|title=Wangkiny / Language Glossary|author= |website=derbalnara.org.au|access-date=10 June 2020 }} is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia. It extends from the south of the mouth of the Swan River at Fremantle for about {{convert|25|km}} to Point Peron near Rockingham. The total area of the sound is about {{convert|100|km2}}.
It is bounded on the east by the mainland council areas of Fremantle, Cockburn, Kwinana and Rockingham, on the west by Garden Island and Carnac Island, and includes several rocky outcrops and reefs. Gage Roads lies to the north.
The sound was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling, probably after Admiral Sir George Cockburn.{{Cite web|url=http://www.cockburn.wa.gov.au/about_cockburn/history/|title=City of Cockburn History|website=www.cockburn.wa.gov.au|access-date=2017-02-01}}

Water pollution
Several media reports have been made on pollution of the water in Cockburn Sound, where in late 2015 an estimated 2,100 fish died{{Cite news|url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-07/cockburn-sound-water-quality-improved-government-insists/7008154|title=Cockburn Sound water quality on the rise despite fish kill, minister says|date=2015-12-07|newspaper=ABC News|access-date=2017-02-01}} as a result of algal blooms through poor local water quality.
Reports from 2010 suggest the monitoring of pollutants was not adequate, using degradation of sea-grass since 2005 as a key indicator.{{Cite web|url=http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/publications/tabledpapers.nsf/displaypaper/3812543a2526f3fa7e161e2a482577a6001a3632/$file/tp2543.pdf|title=Environmental Management of Cockburn Sound|last=Murphy|first=Colin|date=2010|website=Western Australian Auditor General's Report|publisher=Western Australian Government|access-date=2017-02-02}}
Media coverage in December 2016 indicates the leaking of firefighting chemicals from the local defence base at Garden Island could be a factor,{{Cite news|url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-16/environment-minister-unable-to-confirm-if-cockburn-sound-safe/8125692|title=WA Environment Minister unable to confirm if Cockburn Sound safe|date=2016-12-16|newspaper=ABC News|access-date=2017-02-01}} however the report was only made available in September 2016. Prior official reports indicate the water quality was improving. However, there is doubt towards the scope of the report, as it does not include factors such as thermal stress from increased water temperature and oxygen stress as a result of climate change{{citation needed|date=November 2017}} and localised desalination.
