Cod Hole is one of the best known dive sites in the world and is located on the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia on ribbon reef number 10.{{cite book|last=Coleman|first=Neville|author2=Marsh, Nigel|title=Diving Australia: A Guide to the Best Diving Down Under|publisher=Tuttle Publishing|date=2004|chapter=Lizard Island|isbn=962-593-311-5|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=PkfjhkmkkA0C|accessdate=2008-06-19}} It is notable for and is named after the dozen or so potato cod that live there. The sanctioned feeding of these fish and number of visitors to the site has also made it a focal point in the debate over reef management.{{cite journal|last=Quinn|first=NJ|author2=Kojis, BL|year=1990|title=Are divers destroying the Great Barrier Reef's Cod Hole? |journal=In: Jaap, WC (Ed). The potato cod at the site can weigh 6–30 kg, having been fed by divers for the last 20 years [when?] since underwater photographers Ron and Valerie Taylor publicised the site.{{cite web|url=http://www.divingcairns.com.au/reef7.html|title=Cod Hole|publisher=Diving Cairns|accessdate=2008-06-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080607233837/http://www.divingcairns.com.au/reef7.html|archive-date=7 June 2008|url-status=dead}} Their numbers have declined as the site has become more popular, with the average number of potato cod seen per dive almost halving between 1992 and 1998.{{cite web|url=http://kurrawa.gbrmpa.gov.au/corp_site/info_services/publications/reef_research/issue3.4_98/3.4wot.html|title=The Cod Hole: long-term monitoring of human usage, fish populations and injuries to fish and the environment|last=Davis|first=Kim|date=1998|publisher=Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority|accessdate=2008-06-19|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060827171337/http://kurrawa.gbrmpa.gov.au/corp_site/info_services/publications/reef_research/issue3.4_98/3.4wot.html|archive-date=2006-08-27|url-status=dead}}
