Taxonomy

Herpestes semitorquatus was the scientific name proposed by John Edward Gray in 1846 for a dark brown mongoose specimen collected in Borneo.{{cite journal |author=Gray, J.E. |year=1846 |title=New species of Mammalia |journal=The Annals and Magazine of Natural History; Zoology, Botany, and Geology |volume=18 |issue=118 |pages=211–212 |url=https://archive.org/details/annalsmagazineof18lond/page/211}}

Mungos semitorquatus uniformis proposed by Herbert C. Robinson and Cecil Boden Kloss in 1919 were two collared mongooses collected in Ophir District, West Sumatra.{{cite journal |author1=Robinson, H.C. |name-list-style=amp |author2=Kloss, C.B. |year=1919 |title=On mammals chiefly from the Ophir District, W.-Sumatra, collected by Mr. E. Bornean and Sumatran collared mongooses exhibit little genetic divergence.{{cite journal |author=Veron, G. |author2=Patou, M-L. |author3=Debruyne, R. |author4=Couloux, A. |author5=Fernandez, D.A.P. |author6=Wong, S.T. |author7=Fuchs, J. |author8=Jennings, A.P. |date=2015 |title=Systematics of the Southeast Asian mongooses (Herpestidae, Carnivora): solving the mystery of the elusive collared mongoose and Palawan mongoose |journal=Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society |volume=173 |pages=236–248 |doi=10.1111/zoj.12110}}
