Collinston is mentioned as the approximate location where Captain John C. Frémont crossed the Bear River in 1843.Hooton Jr LW: [http://www.slcgov.com/Utilities/NewsEvents/news2000/news11022000.htm "The Bear River"] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080821175358/http://www.slcgov.com/utilities/NewsEvents/news2000/news11022000.htm |date=2008-08-21 }}. The town was originally known as Hampton or Hampton Ford. It was named for Ben Hampton, who, with William Godbe, operated a toll ferry across the Bear River from 1867 to 1868. James Standing later bought the ferry and bridge rights and moved the town to higher ground {{convert|1|mi}} east. The name was changed to Collinston, after Utah Northern Railroad conductor Collins Fulmer.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=z3Pqk9tazU4C&pg=PA87|title=Utah Place Names: A Comprehensive Guide to the Origins of Geographic Names: A Compilation|last=Van Cott|first=John W.|publisher=University of Utah Press|location=Salt Lake City|page=87|year=1990|accessdate=16 Mar 2018|isbn=978-0-87480-345-7|oclc=797284427}}
