Colophon berrisfordi is a species of beetle in the family Lucanidae, commonly known as stag beetles. It was first described by Hungarian entomologist Sebö Endrödy-Younga in 1988. The species is endemic to South Africa, where it is known from specific mountainous habitats.

Description

Like other members of the genus Colophon, C. berrisfordi exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males possessing large, well-developed mandibles used for combat and display. The body is generally dark brown to black, with a slightly flattened, robust shape adapted for life in rocky alpine terrain.{{cite journal |last=Endrödy-Younga |first=S. |year=1988 |title=The genus Colophon Gray (Coleoptera: Lucanidae): new species and notes |journal=Annals of the Transvaal Museum |volume=34 |pages=321–342}}

Distribution and Habitat

C. berrisfordi is restricted to high-altitude areas of the Western Cape province in South Africa, specifically in the Cederberg and surrounding mountain ranges. It inhabits fynbos vegetation and is often found beneath rocks and in leaf litter. The species’ limited distribution and habitat specificity make it vulnerable to environmental changes.{{cite web |title=Colophon berrisfordi |url=https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/19421/8808806 |website=IUCN Red List |access-date=8 April 2025}}

Conservation Status

Colophon berrisfordi is considered to be of conservation concern due to its restricted range and threats such as habitat degradation, climate change, and illegal collection. The beetle is protected under South African law, and collecting or trading specimens without a permit is prohibited.{{cite web |title=Endangered Insects of South Africa |url=https://www.environment.gov.za |publisher=South African Department of Environmental Affairs |access-date=8 April 2025}}

Taxonomy

The species is part of the genus Colophon, which includes several rare and geographically restricted species found only in South Africa. The genus is notable for its high level of endemism and has been the subject of multiple taxonomic revisions.{{cite journal |last=Krikken |first=J. |year=2001 |title=Taxonomic review of the genus Colophon Gray (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) |journal=Zoologische Mededelingen |volume=75 |issue=5 |pages=103–120}}
