This gun was chambered in the .32 New Police, which is very similar to the .32 S&W Long.{{cite book |author-link=Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute |date=2022 |title=SAAMI Z299.3-2022 Voluntary Industry Performance Standards for Pressure and Velocity of Centrefire Pistol and Revolver Ammunition for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers |url=https://saami.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/SAAMI-Z299.3-2022-Centerfire-Pistol-Revolver-Approved-12-13-2022.pdf |publisher=Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. |page=34}} In addition to the .32 New Police cartridge, the revolver was available in 32 Colt.

The Colt New Police was manufactured from 1896 to 1907 by Colt's Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. The sights on the revolver were fixed with a round blade in front and a grooved rear sight. The revolver was available with a {{frac|2|1|2}}-inch, four-inch, or six-inch barrel in a blued or nickel finish and hard rubber grips. The Colt New Police was selected by New York City (NYPD) Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt in 1896 to be the first standard-issue revolver for NYPD officers.{{cite book|last=Flayderman|first=Norm|title=Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values|date=17 December 2007|publisher=F+W Media, Inc|location=Iola, Wisconsin|isbn=0-89689-455-X|pages=113–114}}{{cite book|last=Sapp|first=Rick|title=Standard Catalog of Colt Firearms|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Q-rnXe1g-F0C&pg=PA103|date=2007|publisher=F+W Media, Inc|location=Iola, Wisconsin|isbn=0-89689-534-3|page=103}}{{Dead link|date=December 2023 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}
