"Combo on the Run" is a song by the Philippine alternative rock band Eraserheads from their debut album Ultraelectromagneticpop! (1993).
Composition
The song was the band's attempt at funk according to drummer Raimund Marasigan.{{cite web |last1=Javier |first1=Robert |title=ERASERHEADS SHOOT RN'R (from "Rock & Rhythm" Vol. 4, # 69 / 1993) |url=http://www.schizo-archives.com/eraserheads/works/prod-notes_ultraelectromagneticpop.html |website=Schizo Archives |access-date=3 April 2024}} According to writer Ely Buendia, it was inspired by the band's first concert gig outside Manila in Cebu, where they opened for Filipino pop rock band Introvoys in September 1991. “[Cebu’s] scene was very, very different from Manila at that time,” Buendia recounted, with the crowd preferring glam rock acts such as Skid Row, Bon Jovi and local band The Monks. “The crowd was booing us when we played our songs because they’re not into college garage,” he continued.{{cite web |last1=Agbayani |first1=Susan Claire |title=From Ultra! to Circus: Ely Buendia looks back at 1994 |url=https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/specials/content/113/from-ultra-to-circus-ely-buendia-looks-back-at-1994/ |website=GMA News Online |access-date=12 August 2024}}
The song features a backmasked message ("Formoso sucks!"), referring to album producer Ed Formoso.{{cite web |last1=Del Mundo |first1=Jessica |title=Eheads sa Amerika |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20010125031100/http://www.philmusic.com/zine/features/2000/07/070700_eheads-usa2000/index.htm |website=Philmusic.com |access-date=24 August 2024}} He had abruptly left the Ultraelectromagneticpop! recording sessions, forcing the band to finish producing the rest of the album.{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kIREwcuTBc|title=Combo on the Run" backmasking revealed!|author=schizo's Eraserheads Video Vault|access-date=December 19, 2021|website=YouTube}} The uploader erroneously says the backmask is "Ed Formoso sucks!" despite it lacking an "Ed."
The 2025 documentary on the band got its name from the song.
