History
In December 1986, Toronto-based developer Olympia and York revealed that they had acquired property north of Jasper Avenue and south of Manulife Place between 101 and 102 Street.{{cite news |author=Tait, Cam |title=Jasper Avenue plan praised |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-jasper-avenue-plan-prai/160049264/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=December 21, 1986 |pages=D15 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}} The following year, Olympia and York announced plans for an 1.35 million square foot project, then called CityCentre, in downtown Edmonton that would consist of twin skyscrapers and a shopping mall. The project would be built in phases with 1.2 million square foot in office space and 150,000 square foot of retail space planned.{{cite news |author=Thorne, Duncan |title=Province to be major tenant in massive twin-tower project |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-province-to-be-major-te/160043399/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=April 3, 1987 |pages=D2 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}} Construction of phase one began in fall 1987 with the 27-storey skyscraper opening in January 1990. The complex's shopping mall was originally scheduled to open in the spring of 1990. However, due to the lack of tenants, its opening was repeatedly delayed and ultimately postponed until the fall of 1991.{{cite news |author=Chalmers, Ron |title=O & Y mall will be upscale |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-o-y-mall-will-be-upsc/160042170/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=February 3, 1990 |pages=D1 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}}{{cite news |last1=Staples |first1=David |last2=Sadava |first2=Mike |title=Mall delays opening — again |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-mall-delays-opening-a/160043772/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=January 30, 1991 |pages=B1 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}} In 1992, Olympia and York went bankrupt and in June 1993 sold the complex to Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Plans for phase two, which would had incorporated the CIBC branch at the corner of 101 Street and Jasper Avenue into the complex and constructing a second skyscraper, were put on hold indefinitely due to a downturn of the commercial real estate market at the time.{{cite news |author=MacDonald, Jac |title=Cash-strapped O&Y sells CityCentre to CIBC |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-cash-strapped-oy-sells/160041574/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=June 13, 1993 |pages=D9 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}} The complex was renamed Commerce Place in January 1994.{{cite news |author=Chalmers, Ron |title=New name for City-Centre |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/edmonton-journal-cheesecake-cafe-distinc/160041872/ |work=Edmonton Journal |date=December 3, 1993 |pages=F8 |access-date=November 30, 2024 |via=Newspapers.com}}
