Accreditation standards
There are many requirements for the accreditation of a college of osteopathic medicine. Accreditation requires that the college have a clearly defined mission, with resources to attain it, and evidence that successful achievement of the mission is likely. Accreditation also requires that the college incorporate the science of medicine and osteopathic principles and practice into the curriculum.{{cite web |url=http://www.nj.gov/highereducation/AGMEC/osteopathic_med_school_accreditation_standards.pdf |title=Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation |date=December 10, 2006 |publisher=State of New Jersey |access-date=April 5, 2012 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080908041004/http://www.nj.gov/highereducation/AGMEC/osteopathic_med_school_accreditation_standards.pdf |archive-date=September 8, 2008 }} In order for a new school to open or for an established school to receive approval to grow in size, the school must also demonstrate that it has access to enough clerkship sites for the third and fourth year students.{{cite journal|last=Krueger|first=PM|author2=Dane, P |author3=Slocum, P |author4= Kimmelman, M |title=Osteopathic clinical training in three universities.|journal=Academic Medicine|date=June 2009|volume=84|issue=6|pages=712–7|pmid=19474543|doi=10.1097/ACM.0b013e3181a409b1|doi-access=free}} Standards also require training in internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, family practice, surgery, psychiatry, emergency medicine, radiology, preventive medicine and public health.{{cite web |title=Overview of Osteopathic Medical Education/Accreditation/The Four-Year Curriculum (2012 Osteopathic Medical College Information Book) |url=http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/2012cib/2012cib-p8.pdf |publisher=American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine |year=2012 |access-date=2012-11-03 |archive-date=2023-02-01 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230201102411/https://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/2012cib/2012cib-p8.pdf |url-status=dead }}
