History
In 1999/2000, Logic Programming Associates partnered with a small London law firm, Tarlo-Lyons, to bring some document assembly technology to market. They formed a new company called Business Integrity Ltd and the product, which was initially called DealBuilder, eventually became Contract Express. The full story is recounted by Clive Spenser, one of the original instigators.{{citation |url=https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/very-early-days-contract-express-clive-spenser// | title=The very early days of Contract Express | accessdate=2023-11-23}}
In 2010, BIL launched contractexpress.com as described an interview with Ken Adams.{{citation |url=https://www.adamsdrafting.com/business-integrity-launches-contractexpress-dot-com/ | title=Business Integrity Launches ContractExpress.com | accessdate=2023-11-23}}
In 2015, Thomson Reuters acquired Business Integrity and the company became part of the Legal business of Thomson Reuters. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.{{citation |url=https://legaltechnology.com/2015/10/01/breaking-news-thomson-reuters-acquires-business-integrity/ | title=Thomson Reuters acquires Business Integrity | date=30 September 2015 | accessdate=2023-11-23}}
Functionality
Contract Express template creation is conducted entirely within a Microsoft Word interface. As a Microsoft Word App, Contract Express Author integrates into the Microsoft Word ribbon, providing a familiar user experience for users. The add-in provides the ease and speed of automating complex legal documents without the complexity inherent in traditional document assembly tools. Further, generated documents automatically inherit their styling from the marked-up Word document without having to apply styles to each generated document.{{cite web|url=http://www.law.com/jsp/lawtechnologynews/PubArticleLTN.jsp?id=1202458746868 |title=Law.com: Sum of Parts | date=2010-06-01 | accessdate=2010-06-29}} Authors create a contract template using bracket-based markups to specify conditional text and variable fields for us in their customized templates.
Once published, other users can then manipulate the document using a pre-defined questionnaire to apply client specific details and preferences. Accordingly, the need for programming skills is removed; a basic knowledge of document mark-up is all that is required.{{cite web|url=http://www.adamsdrafting.com/2010/02/10/business-integrity-launches-contractexpress-dot-com/ |title=AdamsDrafting: Business Integrity Launches ContractExpress.Com | accessdate=2010-06-25}} It is notable that the field control used is derived from the conventions of traditional legal document mark-up, for example use of square brackets to indicate areas for document specific information.(Press Release) {{citation|url = http://www.legalitprofessionals.com/America-news/new-document-assembly-features-put-contractexpresscom-at-the-heart-of-law-firms-interactions-with-clients.html|title = Legal IT Professionals: New Document Assembly Features Put ContractExpress.com at the Heart of Law Firms' Interactions with Clients|date = 2010-10-02|accessdate = 2010-10-19|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20101107185742/http://www.legalitprofessionals.com/America-news/new-document-assembly-features-put-contractexpresscom-at-the-heart-of-law-firms-interactions-with-clients.html|archive-date = 2010-11-07|url-status = dead}}
The most recent version of the software is version 8.0, released in 2019. Contract Express provides users with an intuitive user interface, integrations with key legal software such as DocuSign for safe electronic signature {{Proper name|iManage}} and NetDocuments for storage, and HighQ for client collaboration.{{cite web|url=https://www.legaltechnology.com/latest-news/exclusive-thomson-reuters-acquires-highq/ |title=Thomson Reuters Acquires HighQ |date=17 July 2019 | accessdate=2019-08-22}}
