Control-Y

{{Short description|Computer command}}

Control-Y is a common computer command. It is generated by holding {{keypress|Ctrl}} and pressing the {{Keypress|Y}} key on most computer keyboards.

In most Windows applications this keyboard shortcut functions as Redo, reversing a previous Undo. In some programs such as Microsoft Office it repeats the previous action if it was something other than Undo.{{Cite web | url=https://support.office.com/en-US/article/keyboard-shortcuts-for-microsoft-word-9a2e0234-e682-49ff-a4aa-999f07b51bf3 |title = Keyboard shortcuts in Word}}

Apple Macintosh systems use {{key press|Command|Shift|Z}} for Redo.[https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/applehiguidelines/KeyboardShortcuts/KeyboardShortcuts.html Apple Shortcut Key Standards] In general a shortcut on Macintosh using {{key press|Command}} matches up with a shortcut on Windows using {{key press|Ctrl}}, this is one of the most noticeable conflicts. Many programs (on all systems including Linux) support both {{key press|Ctrl|Y}} and {{key press|Ctrl|Shift|Z}} for Redo to resolve this conflict. But quite a few remain where only one or the other shortcut works.

Other uses

The OpenVMS operating system command-line uses {{key press|Ctrl|Y}} as its "abort" character, stronger in effect than the ordinary Control-C "interrupt" character.

{{key press|Ctrl|Y}} deleted the current line in the WordStar word processor for CP/M and MS-DOS.{{cite book|title=WordStar Reference Card|date=June 1980|publisher=MicroPro|location=San Rafael, CA|url=https://archive.org/stream/bitsavers_microProWoJun80_734543/Wordstar_Reference_Card_Jun80#page/n0/mode/2up|via=archive.org}} In the 1980s, many text editors and word processors mimicked the WordStar command set, making {{key press|Ctrl|Y}} a common synonym for "delete line."

In Borland IDEs it also deletes the current line.

In emacs it does a paste action (known as "yank").[https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Yanking.html Yanking - GNU Emacs Manual] Emacs uses {{key press|Ctrl|/}} for Undo and Redo.

In vi and vim it scrolls the display up one line.{{Cite web |title=vi(1p) - Linux manual page |url=https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/vi.1p.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230718085523/https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/vi.1p.html |archive-date=2023-07-18 |access-date=2023-09-09 |website=man7.org |at=Scroll Backward by Line |quote=[count] -Y: Display the line count lines before the first line currently displayed.}}
