The Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER) was a payload flown aboard Black Brant XII sounding rockets to collect data about cosmic infrared background. In 2014 results from CIBER indicated an excess of infrared light, beyond what is emitted by galaxies.{{cite web|last1=Philips|first1=Tony|title=NASA Rocket Redefines What Astronomers Think of as Galaxies|url=https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2014/06nov_ciber/|date=2014-11-06}}
After the conclusion of the CIBER mission, the research into cosmic infrared background is being (as of 2021) pursued by a follow-on mission, CIBER-2. CIBER-2 is a successor to CIBER using similar techniques (with improvements, naturally) and also launching into suborbital space aboard a sounding rocket.{{Cite web | url=https://cosmology.caltech.edu/projects/CIBER2 | title=Ciber-2 }} CIBER-2 was first launched on 7 June 2021 aboard a Black Brant IX rocket. A second CIBER-2 flight was attempted on 16 April 2023, but no science was collected due to a launch failure shortly after takeoff.{{cite web |url=https://sites.wff.nasa.gov/code810/news/story280-36.383%20CIBER%202.html |title=Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER) 2 |work=Wallops Flight Facility |date=16 April 2023 |access-date=11 December 2023}}{{cite web |last=Auburn |first=Luke |url=https://www.rit.edu/news/rit-scientists-aim-understand-history-light-production-universe-through-ciber-2-experiment |title=RIT scientists aim to understand the history of light production in the universe through the CIBER-2 experiment |date=14 April 2023 |access-date=16 April 2023 |work=Rochester Institute of Technology}} The third CIBER-2 flight is scheduled to take place on 5 May 2024.{{cite web |url=https://sites.wff.nasa.gov/code810/files/BlueBook.pdf |title=NASA Sounding Rockets BlueBook |work=Wallops Flight Facility |publisher=NASA |date=16 November 2023 |access-date=11 December 2023}}
