Coxwell is a subway station on the Line 2 Bloor–Danforth in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station is located on Strathmore Boulevard just east of Coxwell Avenue and one block north of Danforth Avenue. It opened in 1966 as part of the original segment of the Bloor–Danforth line. Automatic sliding doors, accessible fare gates and the addition of elevators made the station fully accessible in late December 2017.

Description

The entrance, collector's booth, fare gates, and bus bays are at street level, the concourse is on the second level, and the subway platforms are on the lower level. Stairs connect all levels with escalators only operating up at all times. The station building has four bus bays.

This station is used as a switchover point for subway operators changing their shift, regularly causing a slight delay while the crew is changed in either direction. {{citation needed|date=February 2015}} Station collectors and subway operators use office space at the Danforth Garage,{{cite web |url=http://www3.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Commission_reports_and_information/Commission_meetings/2008/Sept_18_2008/Reports/Danforth_Garage_Prop.pdf |title=Danforth Garage Property |publisher=Toronto Transit Commission |date=September 18, 2008 |website=ttc.ca |accessdate=November 1, 2011 |archive-date=February 3, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150203030610/http://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Commission_reports_and_information/Commission_meetings/2008/Sept_18_2008/Reports/Danforth_Garage_Prop.pdf |url-status=live }} which is located on the south side of Danforth Avenue near the station.

The station underwent renovations to add elevators from the street to both subway platforms, automatic sliding doors, accessible fare gates, and improved signage, which made it fully accessible by 2017. This is part of a system-wide program that will retrofit all stations by 2030.{{cite web |title=TTC Coxwell Station - Easier Access Program |url=https://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Projects/Station_Improvements/Coxwell_Station/index.jsp |publisher=Toronto Transit Commission |website=ttc.ca |accessdate=March 28, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171227103038/http://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Projects/Station_Improvements/Coxwell_Station/index.jsp |archive-date=December 27, 2017 |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=https://www.ttc.ca/PDF/Coxwell%20Easier%20Access%20Program/Accessible_Program_Brochure_web.pdf |title=Brochure for Coxwell Station |date=October 2012 |work=Easier Access Program |publisher=Toronto Transit Commission |accessdate=March 28, 2015 |archive-date=March 4, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304204710/https://www.ttc.ca/PDF/Coxwell%20Easier%20Access%20Program/Accessible_Program_Brochure_web.pdf |url-status=live }}

In October 2016, the Coxwell Laneway Mosaic Mural was unveiled by dignitaries, including TTC Chair Josh Colle, who said, "At the TTC, public art not only beautifies our properties, but it's become a catalyst for station improvement projects." The mural is mounted on the outside of the barrier separating the Coxwell Station bus loop from a pedestrian walkway on the east and a parking lot on the south. The work is divided in two sections, representing past and future. It was created by a local group led by artist Cristina Delago.{{cite web |url=http://www.insidetoronto.com/whatson-story/6927907-coxwell-laneway-mosaic-mural-unveiled/ |title=Coxwell Laneway Mosaic Mural unveiled |publisher=Inside Toronto (East York Mirror) |first=Joanna |last=Lavoie |date=October 25, 2016 |accessdate=February 14, 2017 |archive-date=February 15, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170215224118/http://www.insidetoronto.com/whatson-story/6927907-coxwell-laneway-mosaic-mural-unveiled/ |url-status=live }}

Installed in 2018, the artwork Forwards and Backwards by Jennifer Davis and Jon Sasaki is displayed on the station concourse level,{{cite web |url=https://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Commission_reports_and_information/Commission_meetings/2015/December_16/Reports/Approval_of_Art_Concepts.pdf |title=Approval of Art Concepts for Coxwell, Wellesley, Royal York, Ossington and St. Clair West Stations |publisher=Toronto Transit Commission |date=December 16, 2015 |accessdate=February 9, 2017 |archive-date=July 27, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170727064411/https://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Commission_reports_and_information/Commission_meetings/2015/December_16/Reports/Approval_of_Art_Concepts.pdf |url-status=live }} giving the effect of a funhouse mirror. Davis describes the work as "a three-dimensional sculpted curtain, cast in polished reflective aluminum, a material widely used in the TTC's rolling stock and infrastructure". The "sculpted curtain" is intended as a tribute to the TTC's "behind-the-curtain" employees.{{cite web |url=http://jenniferdavis.ca/works/forwards-and-backwards/ |title=Forwards and Backwards |website=jenniferdavis.ca |publisher=Jennifer Davis |accessdate=August 12, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180813043356/http://jenniferdavis.ca/works/forwards-and-backwards/ |archive-date=August 13, 2018 |url-status=dead}}
