History

The district was formed in 1964 from Dearborn Township School District No. 4.{{cite web| author= Dearborn Historical Museum| title= Dearborn Historical Museum's Post| date= May 29, 2020| url= https://www.facebook.com/dearbornhistoricalmuseum/posts/crestwood-school-district-originally-was-known-as-dearborn-township-school-distr/4421974527820060/| access-date= April 7, 2025}} Crestwood High School opened during the 1965-1966 school year.{{cite book| author= Editorial staff of Crestwood High School yearbook| title= Lancer 1966 (Crestwood High School Yearbook)| page= 1}} At the end of that school year, teachers in the district went on strike, cancelling classes for four days. The dispute was resolved in August of 1966 when teachers agreed to a no-strike pact.{{cite news| title= Teachers sign no-strike pact in Crestwood| date= August 4, 1966| newspaper= Detroit Free Press| page= 12A}}

During the 1974-1975 school year, Crestwood School District was involved in another labor dispute with its teachers' union. After their contract expired in August 1971,{{cite news| last1= Green| first1= Mattie| last2= Ankeny| first2= Robert| title= School rifts not new to Crestwood| date= January 6, 1975| publisher= Detroit Free Press| page= 4A| url= https://aadl.org/node/75776}} the district and teachers union could not agree to a new contract due to salary disputes. Teachers went on strike in fall 1974, and on October 22 a court ordered them back to work. They struck again on December 4. That month, police closed the high school due to a bomb threat and failed fire alarm system.{{cite news| agency=Chronicle Wire Services| title= Teachers try to hold classes at 2 schools| date= December 13, 1974|newspaper=The Muskegon Chronicle (Muskegon, Mich.)| page= 2}}

Throughout the district, 180 teachers were fired for disobeying a return-to-work order. On January 6, 1975, classes resumed after 40 cancelled days as replacement teachers attempted to cross the picket line of 300 protesters at Crestwood High School. Fifteen protesters were arrested for blocking the driveway or disorderly conduct, but there was no violence.{{cite news| author= Associated Press| title= Big teacher walkout brews| date= January 7, 1975| publisher= The Herald-Press (St. Joseph, Mich.)| page= 1}} A court ruled the firings illegal several days later.{{cite news| last1= Morse| first1= Susan| last2= Morris| first2= Julie| title= Court forbids firing of striking teachers| date= January 10, 1975| newspaper=Detroit Free Press| page= B1}}

The district appealed the rehiring of its fired teachers. At the beginning of the 1975-1976 school year, 160 of the teachers were still seeking reinstatement.{{cite news| last1= Morse| first1= Susan| last2= Morris| first2= Julie| title= E. Detroit teachers return; Livonia contract faces vote| date= September 5, 1975| publisher= Detroit Free Press| page= A3}} In September 1977, Wayne County Circuit Court ruled that of the teachers still contesting their firings, 127 were justly fired and 12 had been illegally fired and were ordered reinstatement with back pay.{{cite news| last= Morse| first= Susan| title= 127 Crestwood firings upheld; 12 regain jobs| date= September 17, 1977|newspaper= Detroit Free Press| page= 9C}}

In 2013 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that the district had discriminated against Arab Americans and other minority groups while determining which people should be added as staff members, which made it out of compliance with the Civil Rights Act.{{cite news|last=Higgins|first=Lori|title=U.S.: Crestwood Schools showed bias|newspaper=Detroit Free Press|place=Detroit, Michigan|date=2013-07-18|page=3A}} - [https://www.newspapers.com/clip/104254651/ Clipping] from Newspapers.com.
