Crossbank is an area of Lees, a village in the Oldham district, in the county of Greater Manchester, England.

History

Historically a part of Lancashire, the name Crossbank is thought to derive from the days of the Knights Templar when a cross was etched into an earthen bank to denote lands granted to them.

Prior to 1894, Crossbank had formed a hamlet in the parish of Ashton-under-Lyne,{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/place/10066|title=History of Crossbank, in Oldham and Lancashire|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=13 November 2024}} and lying within the Oldham parliamentary borough. Following the Local Government Act 1894, on 31 December Crossbank constituted one of seven civil parishes within the Limehurst Rural District and administrative county of Lancashire.F A Youngs Jr., Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England, Volume II: Northern England, London, 1991 Unlike the other six parishes, Crossbank was an exclave of Limehurst lying to the north, bordering Lees and Waterhead in Oldham. On 1 April 1914, owing to urbanisation, the civil parish was abolished and merged with Lees{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10346022|title=Relationships and changes Crossbank CP through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=13 November 2024}} and became part of Lees Urban District.{{cite web |url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/bound_map_page.jsp?first=true&u_id=10109139&c_id=10001043 |title=Limehurst RD: Historical Boundaries |accessdate=23 July 2008 |author= |date= |work= |publisher=Vision of Britain }} {{Dead link|date=October 2010|bot=H3llBot}}{{cite web |url=http://www.gmcro.co.uk/Guides/Gazeteer/gazzc.htm |title=Greater Manchester Gazetteer|publisher=Greater Manchester County Record Office|accessdate=17 June 2008|at=Places names - C|archivedate=18 July 2011|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110718144448/http://www.gmcro.co.uk/Guides/Gazeteer/gazzc.htm}} In 1911 the parish had a population of 1268.{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10346022/cube/TOT_POP|title=Population statistics Crossbank CP through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=13 November 2024}}
