Cryptinae is a subfamily of wasps in the family Ichneumonidae. The family has also been called Gelinae, Hemitelinae, and Phygadeuontinae by various authorities, though the Phygadeuontinae have since been elevated to a separate subfamily.{{cite journal |last= Santos |first= B.F. |date=2017 |title= Phylogeny and reclassification of Cryptini (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Cryptinae), with implications for ichneumonid higher-level classification | url= https://www.researchgate.net/publication/318186634 |journal=Systematic Entomology |volume=42 |issue=4 |pages= 650–676 |doi=10.1111/syen.12238 |bibcode= 2017SysEn..42..650S |s2cid= 90996975 |access-date=December 29, 2021}}

Description

Species are distributed worldwide. A 5-sided areolet, a short sternaulus, and a puffy face with a convex clypeus are diagnostic characters for most members of this large subfamily.[http://www.waspweb.org/ichneumonoidea/ichneumonidae/cryptinae/ Cryptinae.] WaspWeb. Iziko Museums.

Taxonomy

Gelinae was the name used by H. K. Townes in 1969.{{cite journal |last=Townes |first=Henry K. |date=1969 |title=Genera of Ichneumonidae, Part 2 (Gelinae) |journal=Memoirs of the American Entomological Institute |volume=12 |pages=1–537}} Fitton and Gauld's review of ichneumonid families synonymized Gelinae under Hemitelinae in 1976{{cite journal |last1=Fitton |first1=M.G |last2=Gauld |first2=I.D. |date=1976 |title=The family-group names of the Ichneumonidae (excluding Ichneumoninae) (Hymenoptera) |journal=Systematic Entomology |volume=1 |pages=247–258}} and later as Phygadeuontinae in 1978.{{cite journal |last1=Fitton |first1=M.G |last2=Gauld |first2=I.D. |date=1978 |title=Further notes on family-group names of the Ichneumonidae (excluding Ichneumoninae) (Hymenoptera) |journal=Systematic Entomology |volume=3 | issue =3 |pages= 245–247 |doi=10.1111/j.1365-3113.1978.tb00118.x |s2cid=84104340 | url=http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3113.1978.tb00118.x/abstract | access-date=December 29, 2021|url-access=subscription }} However, due to the decision of International Code of Zoological Nomenclature's Opinion 1715 in 1994 to conserve the status of the genus Cryptus Fabricius, 1804, both Gelinae and Phygadeuontinae became junior synonyms for Cryptinae.{{cite journal |author= |date=1994 |title=Opinion 1757. Cryptus Fabricius, 1804 and Cryptinae Kirby, 1837 (Insecta, Hymenoptera): conserved |publisher=ICZN |url=http://www.archive.org/stream/bulletinofzoolog51inte#page/74/mode/2up |journal=Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature |volume=51 |pages=74–75 |issn=0007-5167 |access-date=December 29, 2021}} Santos later restricted the family in 2017 to only include the tribes Aptesini and Cryptini, forming the separate families Claseinae and Phygadeuontinae for the remaining tribes of Claseini (1 genus) and Phygadeuontini (123 genera), respectively.

There are about 273 genera in Cryptinae between the tribes of Aptesini and Cryptini.Broad, G., & Barthélémy, C. (2012).
