The Cuterebrinae, the robust bot flies, are a subfamily of Oestridae which includes large, parasitic flies; this group has historically been treated as a family, but all recent classifications place them firmly within the Oestridae.{{cite journal |last=Pape |first=Thomas |date=April 2001 |title=Phylogeny of Oestridae (Insecta: Diptera) |journal=Systematic Entomology |volume=26 |issue=2 |pages=133–171 |doi=10.1046/j.1365-3113.2001.00143.x|bibcode=2001SysEn..26..133P |s2cid=83936667 }} Both genera spend their larval stages in the skin of mammals. The genus Cuterebra, or rodent bots, attack rodents and similar animals. The other genus, Dermatobia, attacks primates, including humans.
