The parish of Cwmdauddwr corresponds approximately to the medieval commote of {{langnf|cy|Cwmwd Deuddwr|Commote of the Confluence|paren=left}}; {{literal|commote of the two waters}}). It was so called because of its location where the rivers Elan and Wye join.{{cite book|last1=Morgan|first1=Thomas|title=HANDBOOK OF THE ORIGIN OF PLACE-NAMES IN WALES AND MONMOUTHSHIRE|date=1887|publisher=H V Southey|page=96|url=http://llennatur.com/files/u1/on__Place-names_ThosMorgan_Pr_HWSouthey_1887.pdf|access-date=2015-04-15|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304203847/http://llennatur.com/files/u1/on__Place-names_ThosMorgan_Pr_HWSouthey_1887.pdf|archive-date=2016-03-04|url-status=dead}} It has also been referred to as Elenydd and Elenid.{{cite book |title=A History of Wales from the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest|last= Lloyd|first= John Edward|author-link= John Edward Lloyd|year= 1912|publisher= Longmans, Green, and Co.|page=253 |url= https://archive.org/stream/historyofwalesfr01lloyuoft#page/253/mode/2up|access-date=16 April 2015}} It was in the area known as Rhwng Gwy a Hafren.{{cite book|last1=Richards|first1=Melville|title=Welsh Administrative and Territorial Units|date=1969|publisher=University of Wales|isbn=978-0900768088|url=http://powysenc.weebly.com/crickhowell-fountain---cynog.html}} It was also associated with Gwrtheyrnion on the east of the Wye, together they formed a cantref.{{cite book|last1=Rees|first1=William|title=An Historical Atlas of Wales from Early to Modern Times|date=1951|publisher=Faber & Faber|quote=Plate 28}} This commote should not be confused with the commote of Deuddwr in Ystlyg which is also in Powys.

The Groe, a large park on the banks of the river, has walks, play areas and sports pitches.
