Cyclonic rotation
{{Dicdef|date=December 2023}}
{{Short description|Atmospheric motion matching a planet's rotation}}
Cyclonic rotation or cyclonic circulation is the atmospheric motion in the same direction as a planet's rotation, as opposed to anticyclonic rotation. In the case of Earth's rotation, the Coriolis effect causes cyclonic rotation to be in a counterclockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.{{cite web |title=Cyclonic Rotation |url=http://weather.about.com/od/c/g/cyclonic.htm |publisher=About.com |access-date=5 January 2013 |last=Oblack |first=Rachelle |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130115144032/http://weather.about.com/od/c/g/cyclonic.htm |archive-date=15 January 2013 |url-status=dead}} A closed area of winds rotating cyclonically is known as a cyclone.
