DB Records (stylized as DB RECS) was a record label owned by Danny Beard, active from 1978 to 1997.{{cite book |last=Radford |first=Chad |title=Atlanta Record Stores: An Oral History |year=2023 |publisher=History Press |url=https://www.google.com/books/edition/Atlanta_Record_Stores_An_Oral_History/t22pEAAAQBAJ |pages=32, 51 |isbn=9781467142977}} The label was operated out of the Wax'n'Facts record store in the Atlanta, Georgia neighborhood of Little Five Points. Through the 1980s, the label became known as a source of southern regional music.{{cite book |last1=Unterberger |first1=Richie |last2=Hicks |first2=Samb |title=Music USA: The Rough Guide |year=1999 |publisher=Rough Guides |url=https://www.google.com/books/edition/Music_USA/uwtAx1xP9BMC |page=140 |isbn=9781858284217}}
History
In 1978, Beard helped some friends in The B-52's by recording and releasing their first single, "Rock Lobster", produced by Kevin Dunn. The record sold nearly 20,000 copies.[https://rockandrollroadmap.com/places/record-stores/other-u-s-record-stores/db-records/ DB Records] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111016063026/http://rockandrollroadmap.com/other-u.s.-studios-and-labels/db-records/view-details.html |date=2011-10-16 }}. "It was a great record and a great group," Beard told reporter Jim McConnell, "and it fooled me into thinking that having a record label was easy."{{Cite book |last=Schreiber |first=Norman |title=The Ultimate Guide to Independent Record Labels and Artists |page=57 |date=1992 |publisher=Pharos Books |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=eMEJAQAAMAAJ&q=%22it+fooled+me%22 |isbn=0886876877}}
Beard also recorded and helped other local and regional musicians. DB's roster went on to include The Coolies, Fetchin Bones, Guadalcanal Diary, The Jody Grind, Love Tractor, Oh-OK, Pylon, Chris Stamey, The Swimming Pool Q's, Uncle Green, and Zeitgeist (later known as The Reivers), among others.{{Cite book |last=Brown |first=Rodger Lyle |title=Party Out of Bounds |pages=171 |year=1991 |publisher=University of Georgia Press |url=https://archive.org/details/partyoutofbounds0000brow/page/171/mode/1up |isbn=978-0820350400}} Beard also financed and recorded Pylon's groundbreaking first single, "Cool"/"Dub", which was released on the Athens-based Caution Records label in 1979.{{cite book |last=Hale |first=Grace Elizabeth |year=2020 |title=Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture |page=76 |publisher=University of North Carolina Press |location=Chapel Hill |isbn=978-1-469-65488-1}}
Many of the bands on the label also performed live at Atlanta's 688 Club, a popular venue for alternative bands.
