History

The Daily Nation was started in the year 1958 as a Swahili weekly called Taifa by the Englishman Charles Hayes. It was bought in 1959 by the Aga Khan, and became a daily newspaper, Taifa Leo (Swahili for "Nation Today"), in January 1960. An English-language edition called Daily Nation was published on 3 October 1960, in a process organised by former editor of the British News Chronicle, Michael Curtis.{{Cite web|title=Daily Nation - Breaking News, Kenya, Africa, Politics, Business, Sports|url=https://biznakenya.com/daily-nation-today/|date=2019-03-15|website=Bizna Kenya|language=en-GB|access-date=2020-05-28|archive-date=18 January 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210118064207/https://biznakenya.com/daily-nation-today/|url-status=live}}

The publisher was East African Newspapers (Nation Series) Ltd, which later became the Nation Media Group, with operations throughout the African Great Lakes region and is owned by the Aga Khan.

Goan Kenyan journalist Cyprian Fernandes worked at the Daily Nation and Sunday Nation from 1960 until he was forced to flee Kenya around 1973, owing to his investigative journalism probing irregularities which came too close to the government under Jomo Kenyatta, and his family was threatened. By that time he was chief reporter.{{cite web | last=Veage | first=John | title=Yesterday in Paradise | website=St George & Sutherland Shire Leader | date=14 February 2017 | url=https://www.theleader.com.au/story/4465802/yesterday-in-paradise/ | access-date=6 January 2024}} He was one of the first Kenyan-born reporters at the paper.{{cite web | title=Cyprian Fernandes | website=The Nation | date=9 December 2023 | url=https://nation.africa/kenya/cyprian-fernandes-354426 | access-date=6 January 2024}}
