Dallas Car Sharks is an automotive reality show currently airing on Motor Trend that takes place in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It documents four competing car dealers (JD Cole, Martha Davis, Ash Rabah, and Tommy Spagnola) as they buy used cars at auction, refurbish them, and then attempt to flip (sell) them for a profit.{{Cite web|url = http://press.discovery.com/us/vel/programs/dallas-car-sharks/|title = Dallas Car Sharks|access-date = May 18, 2015|website = Discovery Press Web}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.dallascarsharks.com/the-show.html |title=The Show |access-date=May 18, 2015 |publisher=Dallas Car Sharks |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150516004757/http://www.dallascarsharks.com/the-show.html |archive-date=May 16, 2015 }} Martha Davis and JD Cole are mother and son, and although they share a garage, their businesses are separate.{{Cite news|url = http://popcultureblog.dallasnews.com/2013/07/dallas-car-sharks-stars-a-north-texas-mom-and-son-who-compete-against-each-other-but-sort-of-work-together.html/|title = 'Dallas Car Sharks' stars a North Texas mom and son who compete against each other (but sort of work together)|last = Clark|first = Meagan|date = July 22, 2013|work = The Dallas Morning News|access-date = May 18, 2015|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20150601043729/http://popcultureblog.dallasnews.com/2013/07/dallas-car-sharks-stars-a-north-texas-mom-and-son-who-compete-against-each-other-but-sort-of-work-together.html/|archive-date = June 1, 2015|url-status = dead}}

In August 2013, Discovery Communications senior vice president Robert Scanlon was promoted to general manager of Velocity, a network that he had helped to grow to No. 46 in the males aged 25–54 demographic with original shows such as Dallas Car Sharks, Fantomworks, and What's in the Barn?{{Cite news|url = http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/discovery-ups-robert-scanlon-velocity-614527|title = Discovery Ups Robert Scanlon to Velocity GM|last = Goldberg|first = Lesley|date = August 26, 2013|work = The Hollywood Reporter|access-date = May 18, 2015}}{{Cite news|url = http://realscreen.com/2013/08/27/velocity-ups-scanlon-to-general-manager/|title = Velocity ups Scanlon to general manager|last = Ritchie|first = Kevin|date = August 27, 2013|work = Realscreen|access-date = May 18, 2015}} Scanlon also helped the network to move up 22 slots and out-deliver competing networks that had larger numbers of subscribers, such as NBA TV, MLB Network, and Golf Channel.

In March 2014, Discovery Communications announced that Dallas Car Sharks would return for its second season on April 2, 2014.{{Cite news|url = http://realscreen.com/2014/03/28/renewed-and-returning-sex-sent-me-to-the-er-life-below-zero/|title = Renewed, returning: "Sex Sent Me..." The show, along with other automotive reality programs such as Fantomworks, Garage Squad, Graveyard Carz, and West Coast Customs, has drawn criticism for both being too predictable in terms of plot and making automotive restoration look much easier than it actually is.{{Cite news|url = https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/those-reality-tv-shows-about-restoring-old-cars-stink-so-do-most-concert-videos/2015/01/11/5a14878a-9842-11e4-aabd-d0b93ff613d5_story.html|title = Those reality TV shows about restoring old cars stink.
