History
Built by Sahir Khan, a nobleman of the Ahmednagar Sultanate, the former mosque was completed in 1568 CE. An apocryphal story about its naming states that Khan charged a levy of one damri from every worker who labored on the construction of the Ahmednagar Fort, and used the money thus collected to construct this mosque. Pushkar Sohoni argues that the craftsmanship of the mosque was too high-quality to be attributed to the patronage of common workmen.{{Cite book |last=Sohoni |first=Pushkar |url=https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Architecture_of_a_Deccan_Sultanate/kyaODwAAQBAJ?kptab=editions&gbpv=1 |title=The Architecture of a Deccan Sultanate: Courtly Practice and Royal Authority in Late Medieval India |date=2018-08-30 |publisher=Bloomsbury Publishing |isbn=978-1-83860-927-6 |language=en}}
Architecture
The mosque façade has three pointed arches, which lead into the prayer hall. Square pylons are provided at all four corners of the building upon which rise slender minarets. The pylons are decorated with chakra-shaped moldings. Each of the minarets have ornamental galleries, and is topped with an orb.{{Cite book |last= |first= |url=https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.153598/page/n273/mode/2up |title=History of Medieval Deccan |date=1974 |editor-last=Sherwani |editor-first=Haroon Khan |editor-link=Haroon Khan Sherwani |volume=II |pages=265 |editor-last2=Joshi |editor-first2=P. M.}}
The mosque is topped by a trefoil-patterned parapet wall. In the middle of the parapet are two finials, topped by octagonal pavilions and domed pinnacles. These are connected by a free-standing arch. The mosque's interior is divided into six bays.
