Career

Following college, Galorath worked in software development with a focus on software management. He began working in the aerospace and defense industries.{{Cite web|last=Reply|first=Jason Busch: 18 12 2019 at 1:22 pm Fantastic piece Eric Great to hear your voice again You are the true expert in the product costing market The history lesson is a great start Cant’t wait for the rest|date=2019-12-18|title=The evolution of product cost management tools and the state of the art|url=https://spendmatters.com/2019/12/18/the-evolution-of-product-cost-management-tools-and-the-state-of-the-art/|access-date=2021-09-28|website=Spend Matters|language=en}} One of his earliest projects was working with Don Reifer on the creation of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Softcost program for Robert Tauseworth.{{Cite book|last=Shermon|first=Dale|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=IufyqjlNRmcC&dq=dan+galorath+1988&pg=PA298|title=Systems Cost Engineering: Program Affordability Management and Cost Control|date=2009|publisher=Gower Publishing, Ltd.|isbn=978-0-566-08861-2|language=en}}

In 1979, Galorath founded Galorath, Inc. as a software development consulting organization.{{Cite book|last=Jones|first=Capers|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=BFkXAgAAQBAJ&q=%22dan+galorath%22|title=The Technical and Social History of Software Engineering|date=2014|publisher=Pearson Education|isbn=978-0-321-90342-6|language=en}}{{Cite web|title=Dan Galorath|url=https://bookofmormoncentral.org/users/dan-galorath|access-date=2021-09-28|website=Book of Mormon Central|language=en}}

In 1984, Galorath began consulting for Computer Economics, Inc. It was in that consulting role where Galorath became familiar with Dr. Randall Jensen's modifications to the Putnam model. Because the work was not usable in a commercial environment, Galorath worked to design a more user-friendly software estimation program, which was known as CEI System-3."Why SEER Got Started." By 1988, Dan's company Galorath Inc had introduced what would come to be known as SEER-SEM.{{Cite book|last=Reifer|first=Donald J.|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=9yrdvfZX3CoC&q=galorath|title=Software Management|date=2006-08-30|publisher=John Wiley & Sons|isbn=978-0-471-77562-1|language=en}} SEER-SEM built on the work Galorath had done on Jensen’s model and added features such as a graphic user interface. These advances made SEER-SEM an application which could be used by project managers to better estimate the needs for their software applications.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=VzgEAAAAMBAJ&dq=seer-sem&pg=PA88|title=InfoWorld|date=1995-11-27|publisher=InfoWorld Media Group, Inc.|language=en}}
