Dan Hartleb (born February 15, 1966) is an American baseball coach and former catcher, who is the current the head baseball coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini. Hartleb played two seasons of junior college baseball at John A. Logan College before finishing his playing career with two seasons at Southern Illinois. His coaching career began immediately after his playing career ended, as he served as a graduate assistant under Itch Jones at Southern Illinois from 1989–1990. When Jones was offered the head coaching position at Illinois following the 1990 season, Hartleb went with him and served as an Illinois assistant from 1991–2005.{{cite news|last1=Huth |first1=Jeff |title=Tough Shoes to Fill Motivating – Not Intimdating – To Hartleb |url=http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2010-05-31/memory-lane-meet-dan-hartleb.html |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=News-Gazette.com |date=February 23, 2006 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303230830/http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2010-05-31/memory-lane-meet-dan-hartleb.html |archivedate=March 3, 2016 |url-status=dead }} Under Hartleb, the Fighting Illini have appeared in four NCAA tournaments.{{cite web|title=#24 Dan Hartleb |url=http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/dan_hartleb_99249.html |website=FightingIllini.com |publisher=Illinois Athletic Communicationa |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140710014827/http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/dan_hartleb_99249.html |archivedate=July 10, 2014 |url-status=dead }}

Hartleb became the head coach at Illinois when Jones retired at the end of the 2005 season. The Illini qualified for four Big Ten Tournaments in Hartleb's first five seasons, finishing with an above-.500 record in each. They failed to make an NCAA tournament or win more than one game in a Big Ten Tournament, however, and media outlets raised the possibility that Hartleb's contract would not be renewed following the 2010. It was, however, and Illinois won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles the following year, qualifying for the NCAA tournament. There, the team went 2–2 and reached a regional final. After missing the Big Ten Tournament in 2012, Illinois reached another NCAA tournament in 2013. Following the season, Hartleb signed a new, multi-year contract.{{cite news|last1=Jackson |first1=Marcus |title=Itch Jones Didn't Rush Retirement Decision |url=http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2005-06-14/itch-jones-didnt-rush-retirement-decision.html |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=News-Gazette.com |date=June 14, 2005 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150413020713/http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2005-06-14/itch-jones-didnt-rush-retirement-decision.html |archivedate=April 13, 2015 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news|title=Transactions |url=https://www.courant.com/2005/06/16/transactions-1273/ |access-date=June 21, 2014 |work=Courant.com |publisher=Hartford Courant |date=June 16, 2005 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150415172313/http://articles.courant.com/2005-06-16/sports/0506160128_1_women-s-soccer-coach-baseball-coach-men-s-assistant |archive-date=April 15, 2015 |url-status=live }}{{cite news|last1=Gardiner |first1=Andy |title=Big Ten Making Noise by Knocking on Omaha's Door |url=http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/baseball/2009-04-22-big-ten-omaha_N.htm |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=USAToday.com |date=April 22, 2009 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150413021202/http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/baseball/2009-04-22-big-ten-omaha_N.htm |archivedate=April 13, 2015 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news|last1=Huth |first1=Jeff |title=Speculation Ends: Hartleb to Return |url=http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2010-05-27/speculation-ends-hartleb-return.html |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=News-Gazette.com |date=May 27, 2010 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150413015608/http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2010-05-27/speculation-ends-hartleb-return.html |archivedate=April 13, 2015 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news |last1=Powers |first1=Scott |title=Illinois Makes NCAA Baseball Tourney |url=https://www.espn.com/chicago/news/story?id=6608245 |access-date=June 21, 2014 |publisher=ESPN Chicago |date=May 30, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110603074207/http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/news/story?id=6608245 |archive-date=June 3, 2011 |url-status=live }}{{cite news|last1=Ryan |first1=Shannon |title=Justin Parr, Illinois Out to Extend Season: Big Ten Player of the Year Leads Illinois into NCAA Baseball Tournament |url=http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-05-30/sports/ct-spt-0531-illinois-baseball-20130531_1_former-illini-dan-hartleb-east-tennessee-state |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=ChicagoTribune.com |date=May 30, 2013 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130923000732/http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-05-30/sports/ct-spt-0531-illinois-baseball-20130531_1_former-illini-dan-hartleb-east-tennessee-state |archivedate=September 23, 2013 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news|last1=Poe |first1=Barry |title=Kerian, Illinois Begin Baseball Regional Action in Nashville |url=http://siouxcityjournal.com/sports/baseball/college/kerian-illinois-begin-regional-baseball-action-in-nashville/article_b78175a3-7c1b-54c0-8c98-d61c7eca5bfc.html |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |work=SiouxCityJournal.com |date=May 30, 2013 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180630231935/https://siouxcityjournal.com/sports/baseball/college/kerian-illinois-begin-regional-baseball-action-in-nashville/article_b78175a3-7c1b-54c0-8c98-d61c7eca5bfc.html |archivedate=June 30, 2018 |url-status=dead }}{{cite news|title=Illinois, Baseball Coach Looking at New Contract |url=http://newsok.com/illinois-baseball-coach-looking-at-new-contract/article/feed/551610 |accessdate=June 21, 2014 |publisher=NewsOK.com |date=June 8, 2013 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303205903/http://newsok.com/illinois-baseball-coach-looking-at-new-contract/article/feed/551610 |archivedate=March 3, 2016 |url-status=dead }}
