It is the only Ashkenazi synagogue in Iran.{{cite web |url=http://city.hamshahrilinks.org/Contents/%D9%82%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%B2%D8%AF%D9%86-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AE%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86?feed=7f8efd72-28da-477e-b60f-8e05d3af01d5 |title=قدم زدن در خيابان اديان |language=fa |accessdate=2016-12-28 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161229101519/http://city.hamshahrilinks.org/Contents/%D9%82%D8%AF%D9%85-%D8%B2%D8%AF%D9%86-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AE%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86?feed=7f8efd72-28da-477e-b60f-8e05d3af01d5 |archive-date=2016-12-29 |url-status=usurped}}
It was mainly used during the time of the Second World War by Polish Jewish refugees. With the increase in Jewish refugees from Poland in 1940, Iranian Jews decided to build a specific Ashkenazi synagogue next to the Haim Synagogue.{{cite web |url=http://www.fardanews.com/fa/news/217344 |title=خیابانی-برای-گفتگوی-ادیان-در-تهران فردانیوز به نقل از روزنامه قانون، "خیابانی برای گفتگوی ادیان در تهران" |work=Farada News |language=fa |accessdate=2016-12-28 }}
When the Danial Synagogue was first opened it could hold sixty people. Three Ashkenazi-designed Torahs had been brought from Poland and were used in the synagogue. After the Iranian Revolution, most Ashkenazi Jews left Iran, so the synagogue is now mainly used by Iranian Jews.{{cite web |url=http://www.7dorim.com/Tasavir/kenisa_haeem_danial.asp |title=کنیسای دانیال - لهستانی ها |trans-title=Kenisa Haeem Danial |work=7dorim.com |language=fa |accessdate=2014-06-17 }}
