Education and career

Born in Ennis, County Clare in 1943, he was educated at Clongowes Wood College.{{cite web|url=http://www.clongowes.eu/annual-past-vs-present-debate|title=Clongowes Wood College|publisher=Clongowes Wood College|accessdate=25 January 2015|archive-date=31 May 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150531062524/http://www.clongowes.eu/annual-past-vs-present-debate/|url-status=live}} He was called to the Bar in 1964 having graduated from University College Dublin and the King's Inns. He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 1985. He practised at the Bar until his appointment to the High Court in 2008.

He qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
