Van Buyten became the first-ever Belgian winner of the UEFA Champions League when Bayern Munich claimed the European crown in 2013.{{cite news|title=Van Buyten: We have nothing to lose|url=http://www.fcbayern.de/en/news/news/2014/daniel-van-buyten-for-belgium-150614.php|access-date=21 August 2014|newspaper=FC Bayern Munich|date=15 June 2014}}
