The Darling Sedimentary Basin, or simply the Darling Basin, is located in western New South Wales, bordered in the north by the line Broken Hill-Wilcannia -Cobar and stretching southward towards the Murray River.[https://www.ga.gov.au/scientific-topics/energy/province-sedimentary-basin-geology/petroleum/onshore-australia/darling-basin Basin Details and Geological Overview][http://www.geomaps.com.au/scripts/griffithdarlingbasin.php Griffith in the Darling Basin] It is an old sedimentary basin dated by
Late Cambrian/Silurian to Early Carboniferous.{{cite journal | url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0264817216302471 | doi=10.1016/j.marpetgeo.2016.07.021 | bibcode=2016MarPG..77..776R | title=The present-day state of tectonic stress in the Darling Basin, Australia: Implications for exploration and production | last1=Rajabi | first1=Mojtaba | last2=Tingay | first2=Mark | last3=Heidbach | first3=Oliver | journal=Marine and Petroleum Geology | date=2016 | volume=77 | page=776 }}
It is an intra-cratonic depositional center, mostly filled with Devonian sedimentary rocks up to 8 km in thickness. It is overlaid by the Eromanga Basin in the north and the Murray Basin in the south. It covers the area on over 100,000 km2.Phillip M Cooney, Ricky M Mantaring (2004), [https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1071/ASEG2004ab020 Interpretation of the Petroleum Potential of the Darling Basin, a Process of Integration and Iteration], {{doi|10.1071/ASEG2004ab020}}[https://meg.resourcesregulator.nsw.gov.au/geoscience/geology/sedimentary-basins/darling-basin Darling Basin]
