Research
Broadly speaking, Steffensmeier's research focuses on the relationship between societal categories, such as race, sex, age, and class, and crime.{{Cite web |url=http://www.futurity.org/teen-crime-culture-1506872/ |title=Teen crime may come from culture, not their brains |last=Swayne |first=Matt |date=2017-08-08 |website=Futurity |language=en-US |access-date=2017-08-27}} For example, he has published multiple studies examining gender differences in white-collar crime. These studies have shown that women tend to be involved in such crime at much lower rates than men, and that when women are involved in it, their positions tend to be less important and less profitable.{{cite web | url=https://psmag.com/why-don-t-more-women-commit-corporate-fraud-79e8e715a8c0#.q4a97ipa4 | title=Why Don't More Women Commit Corporate Fraud? | work=Pacific Standard | date=23 September 2014 | access-date=3 June 2016 | author=Schwartz, Jennifer}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/08/05/even-in-white-collar-crime-female-crooks-face-a-glass-ceiling/ |title=Even in white collar crime, female crooks face a glass ceiling |last=Morin |first=Rich |website=Pew Research Center |publication-date=5 August 2013}}{{Cite web |url=https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/07/06/Women-are-much-less-likely-to-be-involved-in/4984426312000/ |title=Women are much less likely to be involved in... |date=1983-07-06 |website=UPI |language=en |access-date=2017-08-27}}
