Datheosaurus ("Dathe's lizard") is an extinct genus of caseasaur. It was at least {{convert|1.5|m|ft|0}} in length. It lived during the Latest Carboniferous to Early Permian in Poland. It was named for Ernst Dathe (1845–1917), the German geologist who first announced the fossil find.

Discovery and history

It was originally described in 1905 on a basis of a specimen from late Carboniferous deposits in Poland.H. Schroeder. 1905. Datheosaurus macrourus nov. gen. nov. sp. aus dem Rotliegenden von Neurode. Jahrbuch der Königlich Preussischen Geologischen Landesanstalt und Bergakademie 25(2):282-294 [https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/55053496#page/293/mode/1up] It was later considered a synonym of Haptodus by several authors, but subsequent examination has found it be a caseid rather a sphenacodont.{{cite journal |author=Frederik Spindler |author2=Jocelyn Falconnet |author3=Jörg Fröbisch |name-list-style=amp|year=2015 |title=Callibrachion and Datheosaurus, two historical and previously mistaken basal caseasaurian synapsids from Europe |journal=Acta Palaeontologica Polonica |doi=10.4202/app.00221.2015 |url=http://app.pan.pl/article/item/app002212015.html |volume=61|doi-access=free }} This was confirmed by cladistic analysis, which recovered Datheosaurus as a basal caseid{{cite journal |author=Neil Brocklehurst |author2=Robert Reisz |author3=Vincent Fernandez |author4=Jörg Fröbisch |name-list-style=amp|year=2016 |title=A Re-Description of 'Mycterosaurus' smithae, an Early Permian Eothyridid, and Its Impact on the Phylogeny of Pelycosaurian-Grade Synapsids |journal=PLOS ONE |doi=10.1371/journal.pone.0156810 |pmc=4917111 |pmid=27333277 |volume=11 |issue=6 |page=e0156810|doi-access=free }}
