Biography
Jenkins obtained a PhD from Oxford University in 1975.[https://nutrisci.med.utoronto.ca/faculty/david-jenkins "David Jenkins"]. nutrisci.med.utoronto.ca. Retrieved 25 January 2024. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Jenkins is credited with developing the concept of the glycemic index as a way of explaining the way in which dietary carbohydrate impacts blood sugar.{{cite news|author=Beck, Leslie|date=2015-02-23|url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health/the-not-so-simple-reasons-for-becoming-vegan/article23123391/|title=Why the man who brought us the glycemic index wants us to go vegan|newspaper=The Globe and Mail|accessdate=2015-02-24}} His first paper on the subject appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1981.{{cite journal | last = Jenkins | first = DJ |author2=TM Wolever |author3=RH Taylor |author4=H Barker |author5=H Fielden |author6=JM Baldwin |author7=AC Bowling |author8=HC Newman |author9=AL Jenkins |author10=DV Goff | title = Glycemic index of foods: a physiological basis for carbohydrate exchange | journal = American Journal of Clinical Nutrition | volume = 34 | pages = 362–66 | year = 1981 | url=http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/34/3/362 | accessdate = 2009-01-28 | pmid = 6259925 | issue = 3 | doi=10.1093/ajcn/34.3.362| doi-access=free }} Jenkins went on to author at least 15 more clinical studies on the effects of the glycemic index.
Portfolio diet
More recently his focus has shifted to optimising serum lipids rather than glycemic index, culminating in a diet he calls the Portfolio diet that prioritises whole plant foods such as nuts, soy, healthy fats, plant sterols and soluble fibre.{{cite web | url=https://www.webmd.com/cholesterol-management/features/portfolio-diet-lower-cholesterol | title=Portfolio Diet: Recipe for Lower Cholesterol}} He has run clinically based dietary trials to elucidate the potential of the diet to prevent and treat chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.{{cite journal|author=Chiavaroli L, Nishi SK, Khan TA, Braunstein CR, Glenn AJ, Mejia SB, Rahelić D, Kahleová H, Salas-Salvadó J, Jenkins DJA, Kendall CWC, Sievenpiper JL.|year=2018|title=Portfolio Dietary Pattern and Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Controlled Trials|journal=Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S003306201830094X|volume=61|issue=1|pages=43–53|doi=10.1016/j.pcad.2018.05.004|pmid=29807048|doi-access=free}}
